Writing Assignment 5 Clarification Here is the further clarification for Writing Assignment 5. NOTE! There is a handout concerning objection and replies that has been uploaded to D2L. That handout should also help clarify what is expected in this paper. Point of WA5: You are going to be trying your hand at the tried and true philosophical method of advancing a thesis, taking in an objection, and then coming up with a reply. As the original handout puts it, you’re going to describe and defend. This is similar to what you did in Writing Assignment 2 (you can consult the Peter Singer text). Required Sources: Two sources are required for this writing assignment. Something relevant to your thesis from Chapter 8 in de Waal’s Mass Starvation book. EITHER another relevant chapter in the de Waal book, or the Christian Science Monitor article (https://www.csmonitor.com/World/Africa/2017/0724/In-Ethiopia-modeldrought-defenses-are-put-to-the-test) (Optional) It’s probably a good idea to go back to the Sen article and refresh yourself on what Sen actually said. Common Thesis: You are going to advance ONE of two positions based upon the following topic. Here’s the topic first: Given that that Ethopia’s recovery from famine has occurred without the establishment of democracy, this puts tension on Sen’s idea that democracies are necessary to solving famine in the world. Yet is this actually enough to leave Sen behind and focus on other solutions? Or is there still value in Sen’s approach? Here are the two positions responding to this topic. You will advance ONE of these two positions as your thesis: 1. Should we see Sen’s position here (that democracies are necessary to solving famine in the world) as ultimately wrong-headed or incorrect? If so, why? (The construction for this would look something like this, though as usual, this is not the only possibility: “Ethopia’s recovery from famine casts doubt on Sen’s thesis regarding democracy and famines for the following reasons: x, y, z”) 2. Should we understand Sen’s position to be pointing to something important about the relationship between governments and famine, but that it just needs further clarification or revision? If so, why? (The construction for this would look like something like this, though again this is not exhaustive: “Although Ethopia’s recovery from famine presents a tension for Sen’s thesis regarding democracy and famines, there are ways in which Sen’s democracy requirement can be salvaged.”) Requirements: The common thesis Usage of chapter 8 and either another chapter of de Waal or the CSM article. A well thought out objection. (See Objection and Replies handout on D2L) A well thought out reply (Again, see Objection and Replies handout on D2L) 300-450 words. Things NOT to Do: Do NOT phone in your objection. Really take some time to consider what an objection to one of the thesis claims might be. Make it a serious objection. The stronger the objection you’re able to refute, the stronger your argument will be. Do NOT phone in your reply. Your reply needs to actually be another part of the argument, rather than a kind of bald rejection. There needs to be a genuine reply that addresses the issues that your objection brings up. Do NOT just throw a random quote in there from chapter 8 of the de Waal text. NO FILLER TEXT. You only have 450 words at maximum. There’s not time for filler. Just get right to the point. Do NOT forget to cite your sources. "Ethiopia and Sen's thesis about the role of democracy in famines" Due Sunday evening, Dec. 2, 11:59 p.m. Ethiopia has been seen as “the land of famine”, suggesting that there will always be famine there. Both de Waal's ch. 8, "Ethiopia: No Longer the Land of Famine" of Mass Starvation (2018) and the Christian Science Monitor article, "In Ethiopia, model drought defenses are put to the test” (2017) [assigned earlier in the course] show that Ethiopia's recent history demonstrates that this is too simplistic a picture, because the reduction of famine there seems very successful. Sen ("Famines and Other Crises”, 1999) provides an important analysis of famines in which he downplays the role of natural disasters and overall food supply and instead identifies the lack of democracy (or a functioning democracy with multiple parties and a free press) as a crucial factor. And yet the recent story of Ethiopia doesn't fit well with the idea that ridding our world of famines is a matter of having democracies, because Ethiopia has not been a democracy during this time. But it still seems something about Sen's thesis captures something of importance. This assignment (WA#5) involves getting clear about how to think about the tension in this second paragraph. In particular, your task is to describe and defend a position that makes sense of all this. For instance, (a) should we see Sen's view as shown to be ultimately incorrect and off-base? Or should we see it as (b) showing that Sen has captured something that is ultimately crucially important and correct, but that his claim needs to be described more carefully? (What sort of a connection is there between democracy and famine? (In this case, describe as carefully as you can this more subtle or nuanced or complicated view.) Once you have stated your view clearly, give arguments for your view. Finally, once you have given reasons for your view here, consider and respond to the most significant objection you can think of. Utilize (and cite) something from de Waal, ch 8 AND at least one of (a) some other chapter of the de Waal book or (b) the above-mentioned Christian Science Monitor article.
