Ethics Journal Instructions

The Rae & Wong text presents a number of readings that provoke thoughtful reflection regarding our business practices as Christians. The authors of the text attempt to carry the conversation further by providing reflective questions at the end of most readings. These questions probe the reader’s reactions to the articles and the positions taken by the articles’ authors. Questions such as these can help hone in our thoughts regarding these issues and clarify our ethical positions accordingly. Thus, we will take time to address these questions in journal format.

After reading each module/week’s selected readings from the Rae & Wong text, you will answer the accompanying questions that correspond to the reading for that module/week. You will use the template provided to answer the questions. There is no minimum or maximum amount of writing for any particular question; instead, you must simply ensure that each question is answered in complete, well-written sentences. The journal must be written in first person and demonstrate thoughtful reflection—no additional research or APA formatting is required.

Reflections on Ethics Journal Template
Module/Week 1
Rae & Wong: Ch. 1
Reading: Gill
1. How does Gill suggest you recognize an ethical dilemma? What do you think of his six tests for
an ethical dilemma?
A: Gill suggests that we face an ethical dilemma in situations when we are unable to make a decision
when faced with two situations that are likely to yield the same results regardless of the decision
selected. The six tests that have been considered in this case provide a clear understanding of important
elements which makes it possible to define key elements that help in determining whether a given
action is ethical or unethical. Therefore when making a decision, there s need to focus on the influence
that a given decision has on individuals involved. A critical evaluation of the action is done in both
cases where the objective is to ensure that the action undertaken can be integrated effectively under
which it is essential in determining important aspects which define a greater understanding on
important concepts which define a greater understanding on critical measures that define positive
outcomes.
2. Do you agree that simple compliance with the law is “not equivalent to ethical rightness,” or do
you believe that “if it is legal, it is moral”? Explain your answer.
A: I believe that the basis for legal and moral principles are different and thus law is not equivalent to
ethical rightness. An action can be considered to be unethical but is legal. Understanding the difference
makes it possible to integrate important concepts which help in understanding important elements
which help define better development of important elements which help in creating a highly
transformed organizational context. As the supervisor if you know that your employee has been
underperforming yet you clearly understand that he has serious personal problems at home. It is
efficient to fire the employee legally although ethical the decision is wrong. Thus there is a need to
have a clear understanding of important concepts which help define important processes that help
define a successful understanding of the underlying issues.
3. Do you agree with John Maxwell that the only ethical guideline you need for business ethics is
the Golden Rule? How does Gill react to Maxwell’s view of business ethics?
A: I think that the golden rule is important although it is important to be open-minded and ensure that
there are different concepts which are evaluated. Making appropriate decision is based on the
evaluation of the issue that is being discussed thus the ability to understand these differences in
different personalities makes it possible to identify important elements which help define key processes
that define successful development.
Reading: Schmeltekopf

1. Do you agree with Schmeltekopf that business schools are not preparing students well for the
ethical challenges they will face in the workplace? Why or why not?
A: I agree with the assertions that have been made by Schemeltekopf. The business schools are not
flexible regardless of the significant changes within business environment. The business schools
should focus on how to be successful within the highly diverse business setting under which it is
possible to achieve important elements which help in creating a highly diversified understanding of
individual knowledge. Being successful within business context provide a significant understanding of
important elements which provide a strategic focus on key factors that are critical in business success.

2. What does Schmeltekopf think is the meaning and purpose of business, according to JudeoChristian tradition? According to Aristotle?
A: Business is a calling where the ability of individuals being successful within the business context is
different. Thus there is a need to ensure that important processes are evaluated and provide a strategic
focus on key development process. Thus making better decisions is based on the successful integration
of key developmental concepts.

3. What does Schmeltekopf mean by the idea of the virtuous business?
A: Schmeltekopf means that business is based on ethical ideologies. There is need to ensure that better
changes are integrated under which it is possible to make positive and informed decisions. The
relationship among employees within an organizational context provide key processes which provide a
greater emphasis on better developmental concepts.

Module/Week 2
Rae & Wong: Ch. 2
Reading: Carr
1. Do you agree with the executive’s statement that “a sudden submission to Christian ethics by
businessmen would bring about the greatest economic upheaval in history”? What do you think
he means by that statement?
A: Carr focuses on this statement mainly because Christian values and principles provide a strong
background where it is possible to make informed decision where it is possible to incorporate important
developmental processes which help in defining positive development. Different business owners
follow different ethical guidelines and thus there is a need to integrate important elements which define
important concepts. The different religious background has different ethical values although
according to Carr Christianity have in place better values which help define positive development.
2. How do you evaluate Carr’s analogy of business to a poker game, with its own distinct set of
rules?

A: Being ethical is based on strategic decisions that are put in place which help define key processes
that shape business development. Thus just like poker game being ethical involves knowing the game
and evaluating the needs of both parties.
Reading: Bhide & Stevenson
1. Do you agree with Bhide and Stevenson that honesty does not pay? Why or why not?
A: I do not agree with Bhide and Stevenson because being ethical does not involve inciting the
feelings of individuals but a selfless act aimed at protecting individual dignity and respect. Being
ethical does not always involve monetary gain, but it helps in creating a transformed understanding of
important elements which help identify important processes that define better development. Integration
of higher level of thinking in determining the positive outcome is based on the combination of crucial
processes which help understand strategic concepts which define vital needs in individual development
2. What do you think is the connection between good ethics and good business (“good business”
being defined as profitability)?
A: The connection between good ethics and good business is that they are defined based on certain
components. A good business integrated ethical behavior and protected the needs of all individuals.
Therefore there is a need to focus on important processes which he...
