The problem: one of your team members has been found to be stealing food from the common kitchen. Food supplies are low, and other team members are unhappy. Name-calling has ensued, and you fear you may need to cut the expedition short if you do not resolve the conflict effectively.

I'M TRYING TO PUT IT IN A ESSAY FORM BUT I LEFT OUT SOME STUFF ...HERE'S MY ESSAY.. TEAM MEMBER STEALING. I'M TRYING TO GET TO SONG BETTER..IF YOU WANT USE IT AND ADD TO IT THATS FINE...'

I believe the best strategy to address the problem with the team member for stealing is to hold a private conversation. Together, we would work out a solution in which the team member would work off their debt to society in order to avoid paying a fine or imprisonment. In exchange, I would allow the employee to continue working for food, clothes and personal items they can use as a repayment. Since more team members who work on the land, the more plentiful this method would work in theory. I would first discuss the plan with the team members as a whole. As for the team members of the crime, they deserve to know how the loss will be repaid.

Next, I would go to the team members individually and give them the suggested option. If the idea was not accepted, I would impose the strategy in which the team members would win and the team members would be forced to work with no chance of continuing to work for food, clothes, and personal items after the debt was repaid. I believe in utilizing the strategy that would help all parties first, and only resorting to the strategy if there is no other option. I would print out charts and explanations of the plan to help both the team members and the other team member will see why this is a better option. In addition I would make the team members of the group go out and hunt for food to compensate for the lack of food.

For the team members, who knows they will have a secure job afterwards would probably put more effort into the work and this will produce more goods. And the team members, having a chance at redemption and also a secure job would hopefully ensure their cooperation.

To solve the conflict, it would be best to attempt to use a collaborating conflict management strategy. Collaboration is best in this scenario because it allows for everyone to regroup in their thoughts and find ways to make a “win-win” situation for everyone. The team member who has been caught stealing food is driven by hunger and sees this as a way to solve his or her own issue. However, that leaves the remaining members of the team potentially hungry and unhappy. By utilizing collaboration, we can find ways to make sure that we are all fed so no one goes hungry. This is the best strategy to use in this situation because we are all stuck on the island together and so team work isn’t just an option- it’s vital for survival. I will communicate this to the group by telling them that if we all put our minds together and utilize our assets, we can all come out victorious and full. I will offer up the initial thought of scavenging for plants and berries to eat. Then, I will ask another member their thoughts. By the end, we may think of ways to even hunt for food! By putting the situation in a positive tone and “thinking forward” instead of thinking back on the situation, it will lessen the animosity towards the team member who is stealing food and show him or her that there are other ways to be fed! If this does not work, I would chose being accommodating to the member who is stealing food by offering up some of my own. Although this isn’t as effective as collaborating, it is the second best choice in this scenario because it makes the majority of the party happy (the other team members will have their food and the person stealing will temporarily have more). By being accommodating, it will hopefully gain empathy and trust from the person stealing. Ultimately I would hope this empathy would transcend into a mindset to be more accommodating.
