    Visual learning is a learning preference in which students are taught material via images.  Examples of classroom and study preferences for visual learning are graphic organizers, multiplication charts, taking detailed notes, watching a presentation, and sitting in the front. Graphic organizers, multiplication charts, and watching a presentation allow for the learner to visually see and take in the information. Study tactics such as taking detailed notes and sitting in the front allow the visual learners to work to their fullest potential.

    Auditory learning is when a student learns through listening. Examples of classroom and study preferences for auditory learners include listening to class notes repeatedly, reading assignments out loud, using a “text to speech” tool online (such as Google Translator), having group discussions, and taping notes after writing them. This information could be used in the classroom in group discussions or outside of the classroom when studying.

    Kinesthetic learners learn by actually doing an activity, as oppose to watching a traditional lecture. They can be described as didactic learners. Examples of classroom and study preferences for kinesthetic learners include science projects, making a video assignment, speaking with hands and gestures, acting out scenes from literary novels, and taking a lot of breaks to clear the mind. This information can be used in the classroom to increase learning in a way that is fun and hands on. Knowing kinesthetic learners need to take breaks is important to make sure they are not overwhelmed.  

    To adjust to other learning styles, it’s important to try to encompass all three learning styles in teaching. For example, an English teacher could read aloud an act from Shakespeare, then ask students to get into groups and act it out, and finally have a written take home assignment. Combining all three styles is optimal for group learning.
