Final Paper Requirements (Note this document refers ONLY to the structure of the paper. Please refer to the syllabus for other requirements. All papers need to be uploaded electronically to the course website through the SafeAssign Folder called “Final Paper” under “Assignments” Layer on Blackboard) 1. Introduction: In this section, you need to introduce your study, by describing the background of your study, the reason you choose this topic, as well as the significance of you study. Specifically, you need to answer the following question: - What does this paper study? (It would be better if you have specific research question(s). For example, why does the number of Chinese students in ASU change in the past two decades?) - Why do you choose this topic? Why it is worth a research? - What is the significance of you study? 2. Literature review: In this section, you need to briefly review what other scholars have already addressed this topic. You may need to review existing literature by topics/ subtopic. Don’t just say that XXX(2006) looks at (the subject). Instead, you should say XXX(2006) states (about the subject).You may use any citation style of your choice, so long as you are consistent in your paper. At the end of this section, you need to state what the theoretical gaps among previous literatures and how you study would fill in the gap. For example, you can say, “previous studies have examined the numbers of Asian students in Arizona, and some have analyzed the numbers of Chinese students in the U.S. However, there are no literatures specifically look at the Chinese students in Arizona in the past two decades, and that is how our study would fill the theoretical gap.” 3. Research Design: In this section, you need to state the methods you utilize, the dataset you use or how you collect your own data, as well as data processing (if any). Specifically, you need to answer the following questions: - Where is you study area? How does that relate to your research topic/question? - What research method you use? Interviews, surveys, or using existing information or statistics? - If use interview/surveys, how many did you do for this study? How did you approach your interviewees? What questions did you ask? - If use statistic data, what data you use in the study? Primary data or secondary data? - How do you process the data after you collected them? 1 4. Findings: In this section, you need to tell readers what you findings are based on the data you collected/analyzed. If you have a research question, you may need to answer the research question accordingly. This is the section you need to specifically state your points in the paper, and it should be a major section of the paper. 5. Concluding remarks: In this section, you need to summarize your analysis and your arguments. If you have a research question, you may need to remind the audience of your search question. You also need to discuss the shortcomings of your research, what could have been done to make the result better, what issues are important but your study is unable to address; i.e. this is for future research directions, or had you have more resources or time, what you could/should have been doing. At the end you may need to restate how the findings are different from previous literatures, how this study is significant from others, and how this paper would contribute to the academic field and beyond.
