Hypothetical Case Study

Create a hypothetical case study based on the graph you chose to use. Include your graph with corrections, if any, based on feedback you received from your instructor. Include the following details and descriptions in your case study:

  • Summarize the results from the graph chosen.
  • Subject (or subjects).
  • Setting.
  • Baseline (how was it gathered).
  • Appropriate dependent variable to be targeted from the graph with operational definition.
  • Appropriate independent variable to be used from the graph.
  • Implementation of the independent variable (be specific, please).
  • Design used.
  • Results (this is where your graph should be incorporated along with a visual analysis of data).
  • Conclusions.
  • Internal validity of study.
  • External validity of study.
  • Social validity of study.

Consecutive Sessions

Figure 1: The effects of self-monitoring and awareness training on two subjects. Brittany and
Ken on nail-biting behavior.
Summarize the results from the graph chosen
From the graph, it can be seen that the baseline recorded the high frequency of nail-biting
for both of the subjects. However, upon the self-awareness and behavioral modification exercise,
this frequency is seen to decrease sharply with less than 25 sessions. This study is therefore
rendered useful for the treatment of this condition.
Subjects
The subjects in this study include two (2) 20-year-olds male and female students at a
public university in Michigan. The two individuals have been engaging in nail-biting throughout
their lives and have not received any form of treatment or procedure to counter this behavior.

APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS
They both acknowledged that the behavior had been happening since childhood. The two
revealed that they mostly engage in behavior when bored, facing anxiety or having problematic
questions in their studies. They both showed interest in stopping the behavior and a treatment
plan was created to help them.
Setting
The study was conducted in the natural setting of the two participants; classes. It was
conducted for 6 weeks during their semester in Spring of 2017.
Baseline (how was it gathered)
For the purposes of this study, nail biting is defined as the act of placing of the fingers in
the mouth which them results into chewing of the fingernails causing shorter fingertips. It also
involves using external objects in picking the fingernails or removing the skin around the
fingernails. The student’s nature of picking fingernails was reordered under the frequency on a
weekly basis determined by the n...
