In the morning, maria drove to a business appointment at 60mph. Her average speed on the return trip in the afternoon was 50 mph. the return trip took 1/5hr longer because of heavy traffic. How far did she travel to the appointment?

then, x + 1/5 = time of return trip

Distance going = 60x

Distance returning = 50(x+1/5)

Distance going = Distance returning

therefore,

60x = 50(x+1/5)

60x = 50x + 10

10x = 10

x = 1 hour

therefore, distance traveled to appoint is

60(1) = 60 miles
