Class,

This is your final chapter discussion board questions. Even thought they are due November 25th, I will leave them open until November 30th to complete them.

Answer 3 of the 5 following questions for up to 45 points.

1. Discuss the process people go through when deciding to divorce. Is this process similar to ending a serious dating relationship? What is the same? What is different? What about cohabitating partners? Is the process the same for them as well?

2. Discuss the cycle of abuse: phase one, rising tensions, when the non-abusing partner may feel like he/she is “walking on egg shells”; phase two, escalation and explosion, when the physical violence occurs; phase three, the “honeymoon” phase, when the abusing partner becomes contrite and wants to “make up.” This cycle is repeated until the non-abusing partner leaves or is killed.

3. Discuss the meaning of the phrase, “Well people have many wishes in life; a sick person has only one.” Talk about the power that crisis has to consume the victim’s life as he/she struggles to manage symptoms or overcome the crisis. For example, people with depression struggle to get out of bed, not because they don’t want to but because they can’t make their body move and they cannot find a reason to make it. For many people struggling with severe depression, the goal of the day is to not stay in bed crying all day. At times, these people work hard to find a reason to continue living. Sometimes it is hard for others to understand or to not blame the victim of mental illness or substance abuse, but if they could recover, they would—they want to be “normal.”3

4. Discuss the reasons people begin dating again (to have someone to do things with, intimacy, sex, companionship, social pressure) and the fears people experience when beginning to date again (feeling awkward, not knowing what to do or say, “performance” anxiety in sex, fears of what society will say about the dating partner). Are these similar to what young people feel when dating? What are some differences?

5. Discuss the differences between entering into a first marriage and beginning a second marriage. Consider the hopes, ideals, and excitement of both and how they differ (second-timers think, “This time will be different”), as well as the fears that each face (What if this one doesn’t work either? What about the children?).

Part 5

Williams 1 Hajer Williams English Comp December 3, 2018 Williams 2 This is Hajer Williams reporting from Harbrace University, the scene of a horrific car accident involving a teacher and a student. What you see behind me is an ambulance and rescue vehicles for Harbrace professor Joseph Barker, who is lying on the ground and being attended to. In a most unlikely occurrence, student Alan Unlucki allegedly ran into Professor Barker as he was crossing the parking lot. This comes amid several recent reports of cars speeding through the parking lot after classes end, causing disruption and danger. The lack of designated crosswalks going from classroom buildings to the parking lot have also been a recent issue and now this. A group of students and teachers are surrounding the injured professor as officials are asking them to keep back. The student who allegedly ran into Professor Barker stands alone shouting, “I didn’t see him!”. The University Board of Regents met recently to discuss the problems in the school’s main parking lot and began work on appropriate solutions, but so far nothing has been done. They discussed putting speed bumps in the parking lot, painting crosswalks and posting caution signs, but now it seems too late. The bureaucratic red-tape it takes to get anything concrete done on campus has been a point of contention, but nobody could have predicted this. It now appears that Professor Barker, who is very popular on campus, is being put on the gurney and loaded into the ambulance. More students are milling around and there seems to be some disturbance, as I am trying to get closer to the scene. Things are getting out of hand here as more students are gathering in the campus circle next to the parking lot. Now they are shouting something as the numbers increase with students coming from every direction. I’m trying to get to a safe spot as more people join the crowd and now they are shouting, “Fix this lot! Fix this lot!”. The sound is deafening as officials try to get things under control, but the only opening is a path for the ambulance to leave. This is still a Williams 3 fluid situation, so I will remain here until there is some type of resolution. The crowd is moving as one towards the office of the campus president. I’ll return you now to the regular broadcast, but I’ll be here with updates later. Back to you in the studio. Williams 1 Hajer Williams English Comp December 3, 2018 Williams 2 Planning a Bridal Shower Planning a bridal shower can be a fun but sometimes stressful process. It is important to be organized and that will make it easier. The first thing to do is to choose a date to have the shower. The date should be well in advance of the wedding and at a time and place that is convenient for everyone. You can rent a space or just have it at home. Many people like to schedule their bridal shower on a weekend to accommodate people who have to travel. Make a complete guest list for the bridal shower. Speak to everyone in both families to make sure the list is complete and nobody is left out. The last thing you need is an angry relative or friend who wasn’t invited and now won’t talk to you. That will add extra stress you don’t need. Select the shower location carefully. If you choose a club or restaurant, it might be noisy and people will get distracted, so it is always a good idea to have the shower at your home or at your parent’s house. Many brides-to-be prefer to have a theme based bridal shower. The theme can reflect something that is meaningful to your family and friends. It can also be just fun, like maybe a Cinderella idea with a fairy tale atmosphere and glass slippers. Design the invitations with a flair. Remember to include all pertinent information and check the spelling, grammar and punctuation carefully. Always proofread the invitation before sending it to the printer. Add some color and interesting designs to the invitation and maybe some raised print. Finally, plan the shower schedule of activities with your guests in mind. Choose things that everyone will enjoy and keep the party moving along. Plan a menu that has some vegetarian choices and make a beautiful cake for everyone to enjoy. If you remember to plan thoroughly and carefully, you will have the best bridal shower ever and remember it for the rest of your life. Planning a bridal shower can be fun too. You just have to remember to plan everything so Williams 3 there is no worry at the last minute. If you do that and have everything ready on time, you will have the most amazing bridal shower and it will be everything you had hoped for. Remember that planning for your bridal shower is just as important as planning for the wedding so don’t leave everything until the last minute. Informative Essay Outline I. Plan traditional and new shower activities Williams 1 Hajer Williams English Comp December 3, 2018 Williams 2 Littering is a Serious Problem Littering has been a problem in America for decades. It can be a crime for people found littering while driving and there are other littering violations that still exist to try and keep trash off the streets. Sometimes this problem affects people personally like in my case. I live close to a major league baseball stadium. Before and after every game, the streets outside my home are literally covered with trash from people who do not care about the environment or that people actually live in the area. These solutions will be the focus of this speech and I hope to persuade everyone to never litter. After the game is especially bad. People are leaving their bottles and cans in the street along with throwing food they haven't finished in the street. It is very disturbing that local officials are allowing this to happen. They must think that nothing can be done to change this from occurring. The smell of the trash is overwhelming sometimes and the neighborhood had been torn apart by this problem. I have done some research and I have discovered there are solutions to this problem. Litter and trash present a danger to the community. It attracts rats and bugs which can carry diseases. The street is also an attraction for the homeless who are just looking for a left over hotdog or a half empty bag of popcorn. People are leaving the game drunk and acting irresponsible. It has brought a shadow over the whole community and it makes it uncomfortable to live there. Letters have been written to the city council but nothing has been done. If everyone in this world threw garbage and litter everywhere, the environment would soon be ruined. Litter in our environment is an important issue. Most people know that littering is a bad thing but many still throw their trash around anyway. Many problems are the result of littering and the inability to Williams 3 control it has caused the environment to suffer. Broken glass is dangerous when left on the ground in public places. Litter can be harmful to wildlife too. Plastic can cause birds to choke if they mistake it for food. The most obvious issue is that litter makes an area look bad and reflects badly on the people who live there. Some people think that if something is organic then it is ok to throw it anywhere because it will eventually be reduced to nothing. What they don't realize is that it takes a long time for that process to happen. Throwing banana peels and apple cores on the ground is still littering. This happens basically because of laziness. If there is no garbage can nearby, hang on to the trash until you can find one. Make sure the trash goes into the garbage can, and does not fall to the side. If you do these things, you can prevent littering from being a serious problem in your community. Littering is a serious problem that can be solved if everyone does their part.

Marriage and Family and English HW and SH

PART 1
Informative Essay: Reflection journal
What just happened? (What did I/we do?)
Family member and friends attended the Planning a Bridal Shower event last weekend 1st of
December 2018.We had the privilege to enjoy another family reunion. The event was hosted
at my grand parents’ home in the countryside. I was fascinated to learn about my distance
cousins some of which I had never known before. I was actively involved in the preparations
of meals for the visitors. As parents, uncles and aunts met elsewhere for a more refined
discussion, my cousins and I gathered for games and drinks and music.
What was the purpose? (Why did I/we do it?)
The main purpose for this event was to plan for the bridal shower ahead of the wedding. Our
grandparents were attributed to be the perfect couples whose tolerance towards each other
had surpassed general expectations, the location was chosen strategically to celebrate them
and also let my elder sister learn something from it. Interestingly during the music session the
two were spotted dancing to the tune of their youth (my grandparents). Another reason for
this celebration was to try and educate family members that marriage or family relationships
require patience and understanding of one another.
What did it say? (What was the content?) [For this question, identify one concept from the
readings, lessons, or discussions pertaining to this assignment that seemed significant to you.
Be specific.
Marriage is about patience, forgiveness and understanding. In their speech, our grandparents
stressed on the need to embrace forgiveness and that other matters were better swept under
the carpet. Members should also learn to go past their comfort zones hence become ideal

responsible characters that care for the needs of other family members. For the success of any
family, unity is a subject worth considering. Finally, a family that prays together remains
together.
What was the point?
Unity is an important aspect as far as family is concerned. Unity can be fostered through,
having common goals, forgiveness and religious aspects. Praying together allows the family
to grow together in terms of religion and thinking.
How can I use this?
I learnt a lot from the event. My greatest point of reference understands other people. The fact
that my grandparents understood each other allowed them to forgive each other and also
make decisions as a couple. I would apply the essence of understanding to my associations
with friends, colleagues, professionals and to both junior and older members of the society as
whole.

PART 2
Persuasive Rough Draft: Reflection journal

What just happened? (What did I/we do?)
We celebrated a successful marriage anniversary. The event came with a lot of lessons, that
life is not an easy plight. I decided to reflect on my past events and what my future held. I
spend a couple of days trying to compare my beliefs on marriage from the experiences I saw
other couples having.
What was the purpose? (Why did I/we do it?)
My target was to find out whether my notion on happy life was Ideal, or farfetched .I
reflected on some of the arguments witnessed and how the couples went about their own
issue. I also aimed at finding out who should always have the final say as far as family issues
are concerned.
What did it say? (What was the content?) [For this question, identify one concept from the
readings, lessons, or discussion pertaining to this assignment that seemed significant to you.
Be specific.]
Life, especially with regards to family sustenance may never be an easy plight. As a head of
the family, never expect to win always in terms of decision making. As a matter of fac...
