Introduction
Human beings have long established their dominance as the most advanced, skilled and
intelligent species in the world. Our ancestors figured out how to survive in the harshest
environments, and we have taken over that role by advancing civilization so far that we have
managed to subdue and tame the most vicious of animals on the planet. Perhaps our domination
has led us to believe that we truly ought to occupy and conquer every part of the planet and has
in a large way, provided the impetus for the comfort that allows us to multiply at an astonishing
speed. It seems that the more advanced and developed we get, the more our propensity as a
species to increase, increases. The current world population stands at 7.6 billion humans, and this
is projected to increase by an approximated two billion by 2055. These figures point to human
overpopulation of the earth given that it has taken the world a short 200 years to add six billion
people to the population register whereas it took over 200,000 years to get to a billion (World
Population Review, n.d.).
Overpopulation is an issue that has caught the attention of scholars and politicians for a
while now as the world tries to figure out how that population fits in the grand scheme of things.
While the limits that of the human population might be debatable, it is certainly not the case with
the planet’s ability to sustain such a large number of people in the long run. That points to a
potential scramble of resources scenario in the future where the limited resources of the earth in
terms of land and natural resources will have to be subdivided among billions of people in the
world. Malthus predicted that the number of human beings would increase because the passion
between the sexes was unlikely to change and also because increased food production is a
