Financial Statement Analysis

You are to select two companies which are competitors (same SIC classifications). One firm will be a publicly-traded U.S. company which reports under GAAP and the other will be a foreign competitor, also publicly-traded, which reports under IFRS.

You are to briefly describe, in your own words and citing company literature where appropriate, the companies under consideration.

The majority of the project is a complete ratio analysis of the two companies. You are to follow the format listed in our course textbook which is the first chapter of Subramanyan, Financial Statement Analysis.

For additional reference about the project, please consult the perfect student submission which can be found in Canvas.

You are to graph the common stock price for the years under consideration. Please appropriately label the source of your stock-price graph.

Finally, you are to answer the question, “Which company would be the better investment?” based upon your ratio analysis.

Coca-Cola Company is one of the firms which is publicly traded at Dow Jones Industrial
Average. Coca-Cola Company is an American firm which is publicly traded and it deals with the
manufacture, retailing, and marketing on non-alcoholic beverage concentrates. The company was
incorporated in 1886 by John Stith in Atlanta, Georgia. The company owns Coca-Cola
refreshments, an anchor bottler which is based in North America. The company’s stock is listed in
the NYSE stock market and it has a Russell of 1000 growth stock index. In the previous accounting
period (2017) the company reported a profit of 1,248 million dollars with a revenue of 35,410
million dollars. The 2017 price per share came at $48.73 an increase from 2016, where it reported
a share price of $45.63.
On the contrary, its foreign competitor Nestle Company was incorporated in 1866 as
Anglo-Swiss condensed milk Company. Nestle Company is publicly traded at NESN with a
market share price of $ 85.40 in 2017 with a net profit of $ 7,183,000 dollars for the period ended
2017. The profit were earned from a generated revenue of $ 90,121,000 dollars. The company
deals with the manufacture, retailing, and marketing on non-alcoholic beverage products, which
operates in the same standard industrial classification as Coca-Cola Company.
For any investor who is interested to make an investment in a publicly traded company,
there is the need to make an analysis of the financial health of the target company. The ratio
analysis is an important tool which most investors use to utilize the possible outcomes of their
investments, and thus it helps them make investment decisions. According to the international
financial reporting standards (IFRS), the presentation and currency are some of the challenges that
hinder the ability of the investors to use the financial statements. The investors will lack the ability
to make comparison between companies even if they fall in the same industry. Therefore, financial
