speed=331 m/s + .6 m/s times each degree above 0°C

How does the above value for the speed of sound compare with the average speed you obtained from the experiment? (Give the average % difference and a concluding statement. Show all work.)

% difference = (accepted value of speed of sound- experimental value)/accepted value *100

the percent difference could be find out by the above formula.

The speed of sound is influenced by several factors, including medium, density and temperature. if the percent difference is larger that means your experiment was performed in less ideal conditions and if it is less then you have provided best conditions to your experiment.

speed of sound in air=331.3+0.6 T

                                 = 331.3+0.6*27

                                 = 347.66m(accepted value)

% difference = (accepted value- experimental value)/accepted value *100

                    = (347.66-347.2)/347.66 *100

                    = 0.1%

CONCLUSION:

the percent difference for this experiment came out to be 0.1% which could be due to handling error. the pitch of the tuning fork also varies with temperature.
