This is how you go about numbers with different signs.
Lets begin with what we know then we complete with the unknowns
let us start with adding 2 numbers
example +5 add + 5
When the sign is positive we don't indicate it
Lets go to subtract
a postive 5 added to a negative 5
5 +( -5)
Let us look at it this way. You have $5 you buy goods worthy $5. How much are you left with?
You are left with $0
Lets say you had borrowed $5 and then you Borrow $5 more. How much is the total debt
Supposing you had borrowed $5 and earned $10. How much would you be having?
=-5 + (+10)
Supposing you had borrowed $10 and earned $5. How much would you be having?
=-10 + (+5)
Therefore we say you still have a deficit of $5
