Description

Sociology: Data Science

Prompt:

Structurally, the elements I expect are:

  • background information on your concept, I’d like some references
    • Add reference materials to your background information
  • your research question
    • Add reference materials to your research question
  • descriptions of quantifiable outcome variable(s) based on your concept
  • descriptions of independent variables that you think would affect your outcome variable
  • information on where you would acquire the data and how you would acquire it (survey, scraping, pre-made datasets, partnership with a group, integration of multiple datasets).
  • I’d like for you to give examples of how you’d use the data acquisition and management tools we have learned to assist you in pulling together your project.
    • Will you need to scrape data?
    • Will you need to use a relational database to integrate multiple data sources?
    • What would those tables look like?
    • How would you go about doing integrating (remember you need to have the same observation level to link the data)?

YOU MUST:

  • give concrete structure to your research question and variables
  • provide information on how your input and output variables relate
  • give detailS on how you will organize your disparate sources of data
  • how you will use the tools we’ve learned to assist you, etc.
  • tell me why you think this work will matter: how can answering your research question lead to change?

Rules:

  • 12 point font (Times New Roman)
  • MLA format
  • Include work cited page
  • Cite all sources

I already made an outline that I need you to follow. See attached for outline. Everything in ITALICS/HIGHLIGHTED is my notes to you and it clearly states exactly what I need you to add. Pay close attention to those.

Outline I. Background Information (background information on your concept, add some references.) ADD: - Reference materials to your background information - Explain in more details. - What work has been done on racial disparities in state prisons? - Do a brief literature review to contextualize your question. - Cite appropriately! A. A social science concept that I am interested in is social inequality. This is a concept that I’m personally very passionate about. I believe this concept is defined as the inequality that exists on many different levels and aspects in society amongst minorities in relation to gender, race, and much more. I think social inequality in general is a concept that has been more addressed recently than ever before, and I believe it’s definitely a serious topic that needs immediate recognition and one that I would love to further explore. Specifically, I would like to operationalize Racial and Ethnic Disparity in State Prisons. This is very poorly written, fix it, include it in your background. II. Research Question A. Is Ethnic Disparity in State Prisons a real issue facing our nation today, and if so, how can we minimize its growth? ← This is the research question that I want you to use, you can rephrase it but don't change the question ADD: reference materials to your research question - give concrete structure to research question III. Variables - give concrete structure to variables A. Quantifiable Outcome Variable: - Individuals per racial group saturating prisons B. Independent Variable: 1. Flagged (due to having a first-degree family member already incarcerated) 2. Family income 3. Educational status 4. Race/Ethnicity (Don’t change these variables) C. ADD: How input and output variables relate IV. Data Collecting Tools - Where? How? information on where you would acquire the data and how you would acquire it (survey, scraping, pre-made datasets, partnership with a group, integration of multiple datasets). A. Conducting information on individuals living in targeted neighborhoods or ones who are a part of the targeted population through: 1. Surveys - 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. - Inner Joint Charts Polls Questionnaires Pre-made Datasets Tables ^ these are examples, choose whatever you think is best (at least 5) If you’re using surveys, please provide an example survey and your survey strategy. If you’re using pre-made datasets, look around to see what’s out there and tell me what your dataset will look like and what vars you’re pulling from where. B. Details on how I will organize my disparate sources of data: ADD: Give details on how you will organize your disparate sources of data C. Examples of how I used data acquisition and management tools ADD: I’d like for you to give examples of how you’d use the data acquisition and management tools - Will you need to scrape data? - Will you need to use a relational database to integrate multiple data sources? - What would those tables look like? - How would you go about doing integrating (remember you need to have the same observation level to link the data)? - You’d probably need a relational db to store your data and manipulate it to create a dataset. V. Why My Work Matters: ADD: Tell me why you think this work will matter VI. How answering my research question can lead to change: ADD: How can answering your research question lead to change? - Are there any policy implications? VII. 1. Sources A. Information acquired through online research data on the statistics of individuals affected on a micro and macro level: https://www.sentencingproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/The-Color-of-Justice-Racial-andEthnic-Disparity-in-State-Prisons.pdf https://www.prisonpolicy.org/research/race_and_ethnicity/ http://www.nccdglobal.org/sites/default/files/publication_pdf/created-equal.pdf https://www.naacp.org/criminal-justice-fact-sheet/ https://www.colorlines.com/articles/race-disability-and-school-prison-pipeline 2. 3. 4. 5. ADD: - Use these sources to develop your background section more and for anywhere else apicalable! - Add more sources - Cite everything!

Racial and Ethnic Disparity in State Prisons
Numerous scholarly articles have justified the fact that indeed social inequality is a
reality in state prisons in the United States. According to Nellis (2016, 01), African Americans
are vulnerable to incarceration in state prisons as compared to their white counterparts. Worrying
