Contemporary China: Challenges, Responses, And Hopes
Special Dignitaries, Organizers, Attendants, Hello. Modern China has come a long way
in the last half a decade to become one of the leading economies of the world. This has not been
without challenges that China has been able to address in one way or another. Currently, there
are several key challenges that are key to China: environmental, social issues, economic growth,
and stability.
The environmental and social issues that China is facing rapid economic development are
not only a Chinese issue but a global issue. However, China has some challenges that are unique
to the nation. Air pollution in China is a great health hazard. The US embassy through its air
quality measuring station in China calls the level of China's air pollution to be beyond the index
(Lallanilla). The problem of environmental pollution is most problematic in the industrial towns
where there is a high record of cancer cases.
The environmental protection agency's air quality scale states that any rating that is
higher than 300 means that the air pollution level is far beyond the safe limit. This requires that
people should stay indoors and have an air purifier working. In January 2018 there were 19 days
where the 300 threshold mark was consistently surpassed in Beijing. Reading that exceeds 500 is

becoming more and more common. On January, 12 the readings hit a record 886. The high
pollution is attributed to the electricity plants that depend on coal for production.
The citizens are now applying pressure to the government to act. There are more than one
million people in China who die as a result of air pollution. The Chinese government through
policies has dictated the relocation of industries away from non-residential areas (Gardiner).
Additionally, there is the need for factories to fit in heavy industrial air scrubbers that limit the
number of poisonous substances that are emitted. The government is requiring higher quality
fuels for vehicles and people are being encouraged to leave the use of coal and kerosene stoves
in their homes.
