What did Rill learn about Mr. Riggs and how did it affect Rill’s reaction to her new
relationship with Mr. Sevier?
Rill learnt that Mr. Riggs was responsible for the death of her sister Camellia who was
apparently raped by him and later strangled to death. As evidenced in the text, Mr. Rill is capable
of killing given opportunity. For instance, he is said, “He’ll snap my neck right here. He’ll snap
my neck and drop me down the stairs and say I fell. That’s how it ends….”( Chapter 18, p. 135).
This realization made Rill to become much closer to Mr. and Mrs. Sevier who bought them from
the orphanage. In fact, Rill and her sister ran away when they learnt that Mrs. Tann had come to
take them back into the orphanage where Mr. Riggs ran the show.
How did Briny react to the loss of his family? And, why does this reaction make sense?
Losing the family had a devastating impact on Briny. The last thing that he expected was to
come home and find all the children having been taken custody by Miss Tann who through her
connections with the police captured and took the children to her orphanage where she sold them
