Final Exam: Social Work with Diverse Populations Dr. Claudia Rappaport November 28, 2018 Test due: Monday, December 10, 2018 Your name: _____________________________________________ Your grade: _____________________ This exam consists of a single question with multiple parts. Please make your answers as comprehensive and thoughtful as possible; however, your answers must directly relate to and be relevant for the question – stray information that does not appear to relate to the question will not be credited. Your grade will be based both on the number of ideas you came up with to answer the question in pertinent ways (i.e., how many things we have studied this semester that you were able to apply appropriately in your answers to the question) AND the thoroughness (depth) and clarity of the explanations of your answers (i.e., for each answer you give, is it clearly explained as to why you think it is a good answer, do you define terms, do you give examples, etc.). SINCE THIS IS A TAKE-HOME EXAM, PLEASE TYPE AND DOUBLE-SPACE YOUR ANSWERS ON SEPARATE SHEETS OF PAPER. Throughout this course we have seen evidence of problems that arise when human beings develop prejudices, intolerance, and even hatred toward each other due to cultural differences. We have also watched several movies that address the issue of hatred and intolerance, including “Arab and Jew: Return to the Promised Land,” “To Die in Jerusalem” (about the Israeli and Palestinian mothers), “Hate Groups USA” and “Neo Ned.” We also watched some movies that address the issue of overcoming prejudices, stereotypes, and intolerance, including “Trust Me” and “Freedom Writers”. Use very specific examples you saw in those movies in addressing your answers to the following questions. 1. Why do you believe it is so difficult for all people to have true acceptance and respect for each other? Where do you think hatred actually comes from? 2. What are some historical realities that have contributed to people feeling intolerance or even hatred for each other? What are some historical realities that occurred as a result of that intolerance or hatred, and what kinds of negative effects occurred as a result? How might those historical realities make it more difficult for people of some cultural groups to be willing to develop tolerance and respect for all people? 3. What are some ways we have seen that we can work to help people become more genuinely accepting and appreciative of each other’s differences? 4. Why is this especially important in social work practitioners and other types of professionals who provide services to diverse populations of people? 5. To what extent do you feel optimistic or pessimistic regarding what the future holds for human beings because of these issues? Thank you for the excellent experiences I had this semester while teaching you in this class.
