 A contractor is tiling a square patio that has an area of 136 square feet.  What is the approximate side length of the patio?  Round to the nearest tenth of a foot. Show the steps without using a calculator.

given the area, to get the length, we find the square root of the area

11*11=121

12*12=144

sq root 144=12

sq root 121=11

therefore sq root 136 is between 11 and 12

sq root 136= 11.662
