By what percent will a fraction change if its numerator is decreased by 20% and its denominator is decreased by 60%?

Let the fraction be x/y

When numerator is decreased by 20%, numerator changes to (100%-20%) x = 80% * x = 80x/100 = 0.8 x

When denominator  is decreased by 60%, denominator  changes to (100%-60%) y = 40% * y = 40y/100 = 0.4 y

So the new fraction will be 0.8 x/0.4 y = 2 (x/y)

Percentage of increase =  [2 (x/y) - (x/y)] * 100 / (x/y)

                                      = (x/y) * 100 / (x/y)

                                       = 100 %
