Step One: Analyze the Question As you read the prompt, underline key words and ideas to help answer the question. Keep in mind what the question is asking you to do. 50% of the questions ask you to compare and contrast. You are expected to analyze and interpret. Not merely to relay info that you know but point out relationships between events, eras, people and ideas. Step Two: Plan your Paragraphs This should not take you too long. Generally, read through the documents provided and place them into three themes or categories which will help you answer the questions. It might be a good idea to create a three column chart. Then as you read the docs, place them in the proper column of your chart. In each theme, place a quote from a document and cite it. Example (Doc 1). You must cite a majority of the documents. At least 6 in your essay. You also need to include at least three point of views or biases from the documents. Example: "It makes sense that Ignatious of Loyola would be against the reformation since he was a devout Catholic." Step Three: Develop a Thesis The thesis should not simply reword the question, it should provide a specific answer to the problem. Your thesis should not only indicate the direction your essay is taking but also include the major points or divisions you will address in the body. Remember, a good thesis should include a topic and at least 3 divisions. Step Four: Write your Introduction Your introduction should begin with a solid topic sentence indicating time and place. It should gradually get more specific, gradually leading up to your thesis statement. Your thesis must appear in the intro but should not be the opening statement. Step Five: Write your Body Paragraphs You should have at least three body paragraphs. Use the divisions in your thesis as a guide to organization. Write your body paragraphs to support the claims you made in your thesis. You must use factual information (Names of people, important events, dates etc) to support any generalizations. Use specific information from the documents and cite them to back up an arguments. You may also include outside knowledge. Step Six: Write your Conclusion The last paragraph should be a summary of your entire argument.
