Nguyen1 Vy Nguyen Instructor Miller ENG111/ENF3 November 28, 2018 Use of Self Confidence to Overcome Social Challenges I believe we have all heard of the common phrase “education is the key to success”. Have we stopped to think of this statement in its entirety and consider the reasons why some people are well educated but still do not live to the highest pinnacle of what they personalize as success? In my own definition success which is more tied to the level of happiness of individuals, I maintain that a good self-confidence is a key to the success of everyone in wherever niche they delve in. Well, to avoid extremism and monopolization the concept of success we can fairly say that self-confidence is the first step in the journey of success achievement in every sector of life be it at work, in school or in the daily maneuvers of life, the individuals who have selfconfidence appears to be on top of the world. Paying close attention, you will come to the realization that these so-called self-confident individuals tend to be successful in all areas of their lives. Have you ever asked yourself why? Could this be because they are naturally born smarter than the rest? Or could it be because they have more money and resources? Or maybe they are just luckier than the rest? The truth is neither of these things. These people have a perception about themselves that they harbor the ability to achieve the things whatever they are set to do, and they are well aware of this impact on their lives. Nguyen2 Building self-confidence starts by acknowledging your positive aspects. Make a list of the good things that you handle best or the things that other people praise of. Think of all the compliments that have come your way as a result of the things that you handle authentically. Do not care about what these things are if they are good, note them down. Try as much as possible to keep away from the negative thoughts that you project towards yourself of which others project towards you (Cobb et al.Pg.89). Always surround yourself with positive, confident and successful individuals. They will help you to pull your battles forwards as well as provide the needed mentorship that will help you in steering your life forward. You must always strive to look at yourself through another mirror that can point to you how worthy you are. In this process do not lend a deaf ear to your weakness because partly the process of success is dependent on improving the weaknesses while maximizing on the strengths and being comfortable with none of them (Woods and Scott Pg.47). Self-confidence can assist one in overcoming various challenges in all the sectors of life, but I want to narrow my focus to the social challenges. The social challenges that most individuals in the social domain suffer from are mainly related to low self-esteem and social anxiety disorder. These two issues can completely paralyze the life of someone. Every important interaction takes place in the social domain, and the inability of individuals to effectively engage with the individuals here can expose them to losing a lot of chances with life as well as taking a good social standing (Jacoby Pg. 31). One which holds much significance in the progress of someone even in the academic sector is self-esteem. The low levels of self-esteem can make individuals to lose focus in whatever they are doing in such a way to achieve their best out of it. There is a complex link between low self-esteem and the various diseases in the spectrum of mental disorders. One thing which is unique with low self-esteem is the fact that it lowers the Nguyen3 stimulation of the brain making the victim is less involved in social participation because they feel that do not belong. According to Cobb et al. (Pg.89), an individual who is suffering from low self-esteem is more predisposed to developing mental health conditions. As a matter of fact, low self-esteem is one of the cardinal features of mental disorders like borderline personality disorder and depression. Individuals who are suffering from low self-esteem often perceive the world as a hostile place that is constantly making them a victim of all the circumstances. They tend to see the world in a twisted way. As a result, the individuals find it very difficult to express them where people are. According to Jacoby (Pg. 45), boosting low self-esteem starts with identifying the causes of self-esteem and then the rest comes in the form of well-refined self-esteem. Boosting the selfconfidence of an individual will make them have a shifted perception of themselves in this light, they start to see themselves as more important and as an inclusive component in the society. It all trickles down to the process of building a strong self-confidence and self-worth. One thing to that one need to realize is that everyone got a piece of the flaw and a conglomeration of strengths that they have to balance to exhibit a good life. When these people build a sense of self-worthiness, they are bound to love themselves more and be more productive. Realizing that you are a perfect being and you can do whatever any other person can do is the first path towards being successful in whatever the thing that one does. Self-confidence is imperative in enhancing the positive thoughts of oneself. It is important to know that despite the life challenges that come with various circumstances you are still unique and wonderfully designed. With self-confidence one is able to do much on the physical appearance in order to look better in the public domain. One of the things that selfconfidence assists one to master is personal hygiene (Bastable, np). Once one is more conscious Nguyen4 about their appearance, they will work towards improving their hygiene and perception to the people in the public domain. As you will realize much of the social challenges originate from the low self-esteem that much people are in custody of. Self-confidence helps in shifting the attitude and mindset of people. In order to successfully fight the social battle, one must be convinced that everything will be better and better. The attitude level of your personality is set by your expectations. The attitude of an individual will manifest in terms of the beliefs, values and the expectations of an individual. Take an example when you believe that the world is good, your belief will be that you are bound to be successful, and that will shift your expectation into thinking that everything that happens in your life is destined to make you become a better person (Motola et al. pg 25). In conclusion, there is a lot to infer from when concluding the fact, the statement that self-confidence is one multifaceted antidote to myriads of the social challenges. Sometimes I tend to think that the only powerful software that God gave to man was the self-confidence. Lacking self-confidence welcomes all the negative attributes of any person while the gain of a good self-confidence helps one to counter the negative social predispositions that are a danger to the social life any person. Take keen interest on your self-confidence! Nguyen5 Work Cited Bastable, Susan B. Nurse As Educator: Principles of Teaching and Learning for Nursing Practice. , 2017. Print. Cobb, Kimberly, et al.
