My Skills and Values:
Skills and values are essential in coping with day to day life challenges, in a constantly changing
environment the skills that one possesses become the major instrument of survival. We can acquire
skills through training and practice, one is not born with skills, but rather one develops them as
they grow in life through the learning process. Values, on the other hand, are personal and specific;
different people have different values, it is thus very important for one to understand what he or
she holds in high regard so that they can allow their decisions to be guided by these values.
One of the skills that am good at is that I can adapt easily and very fast according to the
environmental demands. This skill allows me to effectively take care of my and interact with
people who I meet in different situations on a daily basis. The second skill that I possess is the
ability to be flexible; this enables to respond to unexpected changes quickly and efficiently without
panicking. Am also able to listen to different opinions and easily accommodate new ideas and a
new way of doing things. I am also skilled in socializing with people from different walks of life.
This skill allows me to interact and communicate with other people in any kind of social setting
easily. I have built these skills over time through practice and striving to learn how to cope with
life easily.
There are three skills that I strongly feel that I need to improve in so that I can make my
life easier and better. One of them is situational skill; this is the ability to relate to a given set of
circumstances, this is mostly shown by organizational leaders. I intend to improve this skill by
trying to adapt to the environment, not for my sake but for the sake of others. I also feel that I need
to harness the skill of understanding individuals. I will achieve this by taking time to listen to other
people ideas and opinions, so that I am able to relate to their situations and thus understand them
better. The other skills that I believe I need to improve on is having fearless agility, this ensure I
can make decisions quickly and easily without fear. I will do this by ensuring am well informed
on the situations I engage myself in, thus decision making will be easy and I will have nothing to
fear.
My ideal work environment is one which respects and uphold my values, one that supports
and challenges me to hold on to my values. I see my self working in an organization that
encourages collaboration with other members of staff, gives me an opportunity to learn new things
and one that is not stressful. In choosing my career, my top eight values are one of the most
significant factors that I consider. Some of the values such as stress-free working environment,
collaboration with other people, opportunity to learn new thing and work/life balance are nonnegotiable. I might be able to overlook values such as recognition and influencing others.
However, this does not mean they are less important to me.
Considering my skills and values, I believe I mostly fit in either the banking industry,
teaching profession or working in a non-governmental organization that supports people. This is
well indicated by my skills which am very proficient in and which I have a high level of willingness
to use. The skills in these careers include advocacy, collaboration, provision of care and support,
serving clients and customers and serving as a liaison as well as helping in setting goals and the
use of intuition to solve problems and act on different situations. I strongly feel that these careers
satisfy both my skills and goals.
In conclusion, I believe that the skills and values that one possesses should be the major
factors to consider when choosing a career path. We should strive to sharpen and increase our skill
range so as we can cope with the ever-changing today’s world. We should not compromise our
values for the sake of material possession or to acquire fame and recognition.
