Good Qualitative Interview

The goal of an interview is to capture the unique experiences and thoughts of a
respondent. Interviewers and interviewees cooperate to voice knowledge that is crucial to
understanding a phenomenon or solving a problem (Ravitch & Carl, 2015). A good qualitative
interview has several key characteristics. One characteristic is that the responses take the form of
narratives. The narratives communicate not only information and opinions but also experiences
of the interviewee. A second essential characteristic of a good qualitative interview is that
responses are not overly abstract but are descriptive and detailed (Ravitch & Carl, 2015).
Descriptive and detailed answers provide information that helps better understand a phenomenon
and support the development of theories. Overly abstract information is not very helpful in the
development of theories (Brinkmann, 2014).
