Distance between two ships

Mathematics
Tutor: None Selected Time limit: 1 Day

Two ships leave a port at the same time. The first ship sails on a bearing of 40 degrees at 18 knots (nautical miles per hour) and the second at a bearing of 130 degrees at 26 knots. How far apart are they after 1.5 hours?

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

angle = 130 - 40 = 90

Using:

Distance = time * speed

the first ship travels:

Distance_1 = 1.5 hours * 18 knots = 27 (nautical miles?)
Distance_2 = 1.5 hours * 26 knots = 39 (nautical miles?)

Solving for the distance between them using the
pythagorean theorem:

27^2 + 39^2 = D^2
729 + 1521 = D^2
2250 = D^2
47.434 = D

Therefore, the ships will be 47.4 nautical miles apart
after 1.5 hours.

Please let me know if you need any clarification. I'm always happy to answer your questions.
