Process Intensification

Process intensification is a field of research in industrial development that is rapidly
growing through innovations in chemical process industry. According to Kockman (2007) its
main objectives is generating and providing a smaller energy-technology that is substantially
cleaner to reduce environmental pollution. Basically, it is intended to generate safer and
renewable developments in technology. Process Intensification is designed such that; it utilizes
limited tools through integration of various chemical functionalities in a single apparatus; it
employs progressive mixing technologies and shorter diffusion pathways in edifying transfer of
heat and mass; it enhances miniaturization; it employs new separation approaches; and it
showcases a high optimization and control strategies (Kockman 2007). These factors form the
core characteristics of process intensification in chemical process industry. These features have
been so vital in achieving a more eco-efficient chemical processes. Process Intensification
process was basically introduced to replace the traditional units of chemical process to reduce the
volumes of production plants to between one-hundred-to- one thousand folds. This research
basically covers an overview of process intensification process and techniques and the
mechanisms involved in process intensification such as reaction engineering, mixing principles,
distillation techniques, advantages and disadvantages of PI process and its application in real life
Process Intensification can be done in two ways; by methodology-based approach and
equipment-based approach. These two categories approaches are the mostly used in modern
chemical process industries. However, all these approaches use intensification techniques.
Intensification is defined as the set of procedures that can be attained through mixing and heat or
mass transmission by a supplement energy input through extrinsic field of force or improved
