Ethics in Criminal Justice Administration

Ethics are the basic moral principles or basic concepts that govern behavior or way of
conducting activities (Souryal, 2014). It is a branch of knowledge that specializes with morals.
Professional behavior and ethics play a pivotal role in criminal justice. There are numerous
ethical issues that face criminal justice and these ethical issues require professionalism to deal
with them. Criminal justice administration faces issues in different situations that are difficult to
handle and it is obligated to make judgments on what is wrong and what is right and this can
only be achieved through critical thinking (Cole et al., 2018). Ethical behavior is a significant
part of criminal justice. The purpose and the objectives of the criminal justice are undermined by
unethical behavior. Unethical behavior can lead to the downfall of the system of criminal justice.
Unethical acts committed by criminal justice can be very serious and can result in conflicts
within the system of criminal justice. It is therefore important to practice ethical and professional
behavior all the time.

In regard to the connection between professional behavior and ethics, critical thinking
plays a very significant role. As a profession, one is faced with ethical issues which need to be
handled and whereby judgments need to be created on what is right and wrong. In order to be
able to decide what is right and what is wrong, a critical analysis of situations and facts is
necessary. Critical thinking is pivotal in ethics for it is the process through which a person
determines what is right and what is wrong (Braswell et al., 2017). It is like a form of
determination or analysis between what is right and what is wrong. Through the process of
critical thinking, one can establish their ethical standards from the process of mental evaluation.
By incorporating the process of critical thinking, one can make decisions based on verified

information and truths, rather than variables and unknowns (Pollock, 2014). In order to have
professional behavior, therefore, it is important for one to have a critical approach when it comes
to ethical issues.

Proposal for a Seminar in Ethics Training

In this part, a proposal for a seminar will be presented with the aim of training law
enforcement officers on ethics. Law enforcement officers frequently face ethical issues which
require professionalism to handle. The officer, therefore, needs a training on ethics to enable
them to handle the issues that they face in their day-to-day life in an ethical and professional

The seminar will be a one-day seminar and the seminar should be done after every six
months in order to address the emerging ethical conduct issues. The seminar will cover some
common modern ethical issues that law enforcement officers face. From an analysis of modern
ethical issues facing the criminal justice, main training needs identified include the need to train
the officers on how to live their off-duty life, the need to train them on the necessary force, about
profiling, acting impartially and about upholding rights and the law. Those are the major areas of
ethical conduct that the seminar will stress on. Costs will definitely incur from the seminar for it
is an investment. A clear budget has to be created for the seminar. To cut on the costs, the
training can be done internally. This will cut on accommodation, travels expenses and meals. A
blended approach will be the best training method for the seminar. The seminar should blend
instructor-led training with interactive methods. The instructor should give lectures on the topics
and he should blend the lectures with group discussions. The lectures will help pass huge
amounts of information to the law enforcement officers in a short period of time. The officers

will be engaged in group discussions to discuss challenges that they face and how they can
address these issues. Through discussions, the...
