Introduction
On The Pulse of Morning is a poem written by Maya Angelou and was first read during
President Bill Clinton inauguration in 1993 20th January. Angelou was the second artist to read a
poem at United States’ presidential inauguration (Burr, 2010). The poetry won a Grammy Award
in the category of best-spoken words. Some themes represented by the poem include
responsibility, change, inclusion and the role of both president and citizens in creating economic
security. Furthermore, in the poem, there is rich use of clear rhetoric, inspirational concepts and
prehistoric metaphoric imagery.
Themes in the Poem, Conflict, Character
There are several themes that came up after the poem was read. In the first stanza,
Angelou develops the theme of unforgettable quality of historical events. To indicate this theme,
she states that dinosaur left a dry token of their sojourn here on our planet surface that could not
be removed. She continues to show the obliteration of the Americans who were native citizens
by colonial masters and how slavery was critical for the speaker as in stanza 19 and 20 (Du,
