Romeo and Juliet Play
The play on Romeo and Juliet is a tragic story about two young people who fell in loves
despite the obstacles they faced such as family conflict. It is tragedy passionate story, where the
lovers end up killing themselves so that they would end up together. Juliet’s father had searched
a suitor for her and was to get married, but he fell in love with Romeo and married him. The play
is written dramatically and poetically, showing the way love promoted violence and death. Social
institutions were against the love between Romeo and Juliet, but they loved each other,
especially during the night, where they wished they would renounce their names and be free
from public decisions. The play ends with Romeo and Juliet killing themselves, which is
described as ultimate night, where the two would end up together without the criticism of other
people.
When writing the play, Shakespeare used an epic, passionate and poetic language from
the beginning to the end of the play. The lines are written in a way that they are showing the
poetic nature of the work, for example:
“Two households, both a like in dignity
From ancient grudge, break to new mutiny”
Repetition can be seen in these lines from the play, something which is mostly used in
writing poetry. The words that have been applied are a bid melodramatic such as “star-crossed
lovers, civil blood, and fatal loins” and others. However, the use of the words in the play has

made it appear interesting. Despite the play showing how love has resulted in violence
and death, there are passionate exchanges which can be considered melodramatic, for
example in act five, "Ah, what an unkind hour / Is guilty of this lamentable chance!"
(Shakespeare).
Shakespeare has used blank verses throughout the play. It is a way of writing
poetry, though some of the parts do not have rhythm on it. A stressing pattern has been
used in different parts of the play, such as “neglect, obey, tonight, mistake.” The pattern
is known as “iamb” pattern. The voice breaks that have been provided in the play are a
way of calling attention, just as there is violence that has broken in the society. Romeo
had been exiled from the village by the prince due to killing another person and violence
is also seen where Romeo and Juliet killed themselves. Therefore, the way Shakespeare
wrote the play was also meant to demonstrate what was happening in the lives of the
actors.
In 1599, the full version of the play was “The Most Excellent and Lamentable
Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.” The descriptive words, excellent and lamentable are
perfect for describing what was happening in the play. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet
can be seen in the main title before it was shortened to some straightforward, which does
not tell a lot about what is supposed to expect (Shakespeare).
