Women involvement in global history.
In global history, a lot of activities aimed towards development e.g. industrialization and
development of technology were undertaken. Women in the past were less represented and
mentioned even in leadership. Women were mostly cared takers of the homestead while men did
all the work. They were never involved in decision-making or in any major roles in the society
because they were considered an inferior group to the men. According to the book ‘The Earth
and its Peoples’, the roles of women have been mentioned to be; familial roles and
responsibilities, economic roles, marriage, culture and religion and upholding morality in the
society (Bulliet, Crossley, Headrick, Hirsch, & Johnson, 2018).
Women enabled men to source for resources and build the economy by providing care for
them including feeding them. Men have been described by the author to have had strong arms for
hunting whereas women were not suitable for hunting. Women were responsible for raining
offspring to maturity. The spacing of births was emphasized so that women would be able to
perform their task of cooking and gathering without interference by small children. The family
roles have been discussed together with marriage in the Mesopotamian society on page 34 of the
book. An example of the familial role by women is majorly childbearing and care of the child up
to maturity. However, currently, there are patriarchal changes that affect the role of women in the
family. (Moghadam, 2004)
