Please leave a short comment on the students post. Apx. 100-150 words each, four comments in total. The comments are supposed to be informal, I have also provided an example, hopefully it helps. Please see attachment. Student one: I believe that this group project really enhanced my understanding of business as a whole - especially on a corporate/global level. In past anthropology courses, I have become more informed regarding diversity - how it affects us all and how to truly understand one another regarding our differences. As a culture, we have developed a very lazes faire disposition regarding individualities of others. Yet, over the course of this class I have grown personally invested into acknowledging our differences and what makes us unique in the world of business. To be successful, it has become apparent that one must be open to approaching business universally - which to me means being open to how others do business and some of the opposing traditions and cultures attached to it. This group project helped me to better understand that by encouraging me to meet with my group members in person (since this is an online class it is very easy to hide behind our computers and be timid when asking questions). This allowed me to collaborate and create new ideas that supported our group's original thesis. This project motivated us to ask questions to one another and gave us a blanket/fall back to ask other questions regarding the course. I believe that by the instructor also giving us the option to work alone, that it didn't put too much pressure on students either. Giving them the leeway to decide what best compliments their learning style is something other instructors should incorporate. Overall, I am very pleased with the group I was assigned, the way we were able to divide the work, and the overall execution of the project in the long run. Example: I'm glad to hear that you learned so much from this project, it was very eye opening for me as well. I wish that I had more physical interactions with my group now that I hear about your experience with it. I got very timid and scared to ask questions which I think made it harder for me in the end. Perhaps it would be nice if one of the requirements of the project was to meet up, instead of having that be an extra credit opportunity. That would've encouraged shy people like me to not get comfortable behind the computer screen. Student two: … Overall, I did not enjoy the group work aspect of this course. I started off with a large misunderstanding, as did everyone in my first group, but was lucky enough to be allowed to move into a new group. Although I understand the purpose of the group assignment and understand that it was supposed to give us experience working in a group and we could those skills in the future, I think we can get this experience in our in person courses. I feel that the personalities in our group tended to clash every once and a while and made the experience a little more negative than I would have expected. I think that some people really dislike group projects, and did not want to participate fairly, which impacted everyone in the group. For the pros, I think that the groups did lighten the workload on a person, instead of having to do every universal on your own. I also think that, whatever the experience, positive or negative, this experience will give us as students something to talk about in job interviews. I also believe that this project allowed us to get other perspectives on our work and other interpretations of Chinese culture. I think that was one cool and unexpected benefit of this project. Overall, this project just left a sour taste in my mouth. I think one way the project could be adjusted would be to lighten the amount of work that is done together. Instead of having one part of the project being individual and the rest being group, have a small part of the class be group and mostly individual. This way, we still get the benefits of working in a group, but don't get an overall negative experience that could come from the group work. Student three: … I learned that when working in a group that it is important to maintain lines of communication. I understand that people have different levels of understanding and work styles, so I tried to increase availability of being open when a person needs a question answered or clarification about a task. I believe that I began to become more open to the group and the work that had to be completed. In the beginning I felt that the group would be difficult to handle because I was unsure of my abilities to collaborate effectively. I believe that a group is more communication than the work itself. Communication involves action. The individual work seemed easier because I feel that each person has their own methods and procedures that they are accustomed to. When the work is put into a group there is more of a requirement to communicate and effectively express the thoughts and concerns. I feel that I am still learning more about working among groups. I understand that working in a group takes on more effort if there is little understanding of what to do. I began to ask more questions about what the group wanted to do. The advantage of working in a group is if there are multiple tasks assigned it could be easier when the work is distributed from one person to another and easier when there is a better understanding. The advantage of working in a group is if there are multiple tasks assigned it seems easier when the work is distributed from one person to another when there is an understanding of what each person should complete. The disadvantage is that everyone may not always agree on certain subject matters. I have learned that from working with others it is always better to maintain lines of communication. Student four: Completing this project through working individually and with a group was an interesting process. The research and short papers that were completed alone was very beneficial because it allowed me to get a general idea and baseline of the concepts of what this project was about. When it was time to collaborate as a group, it helped pull everything together. Being able to clarify elements and split up the work to deeper understand certain areas really eased the process. I think that completing the work for this project went smoothly, both individually and with my group. Communication was easy, my group collaborated well, and problem solving was straightforward. Working in a group allowed for creativity, productivity, and more resources. On the other hand, there were a few cons to working as a team. This being an online class, most students have complex and abnormal schedules. This meant that group meetings had to be creatively strutted which was difficult at times. Also, working in a group was more time consuming than working individually. ...
