Take-Home Final Exam (Chapters #8 - #14)
Instructions: Your completed Take-Home Final Exam must be submitted to Dr. Bumpus, via
Blackboard Assignments, no later than 12:00 PM/Noon on Friday, 12/14/18 for Continuing Students
and 8:00 AM on Friday, 12/7/18 for December Graduates. Submit ONE-word file for the entire exam.
E-mail submissions will NOT be accepted. Carefully read the instructions. Answer all parts of the
question.
1. Answer every question on this exam (7 questions). Each question is worth 28 points.
2. Maximum Number of Pages = five (5), 8 ½” x 11” page for the entire exam; No more than
five pages for the entire exam (i.e., Answers=pp. 1-4, References=p. 5).
3. Paper Format.
Margins: 1” (top, bottom, sides)
Font: 12 point
Spacing: Single-space each question (indent new paragraphs)
Spacing: Double-space between questions
Page numbers: Include page numbers
Header: On every page
Your full name (upper left hand side of paper, line one)

References may include those listed on BB (Course Materials) for the Exam, your course
textbook, and supplemental materials.
Example of APA format for direct quotes: “Organizational behavior (OB) encompasses
the actions of individuals and groups in an organizational context” (Hitt, Miller, Colella,
& Triana, 2018, p. 3).
Example of APA format for paraphrases: Organizational behavior comprises the
behavior of people at the individual, group, and organizational level (Hitt, Miller, Colella,
& Triana, 2018).
Example of quotes from online sources with no page numbers: “Many electronic sources
do not provide page numbers. If paragraph numbers are visible, use them in place of
page numbers. Use the abbreviation para.” (Publication Manual of the American
Psychological Association, 2010, pp. 171-172). An example follows. “Much like the
accommodation one makes for an adored pair of shoes that hurt, travelers appear to be

Take-Home Final Exam (Chapters #8 - #14)
Question #1 (Chapter 8): Servant leadership is “an approach to leadership focused on serving
others” (Hitt, Miller, Colella, & Triana, 2018, p. 271). Describe how former President George H.
W. Bush embodied the qualities of a servant leader (Seib, 2018).
Question #2 (Chapter 9): “Individual factors are the most commonly cited barriers to effective
communication. These factors include differing perceptual biases, semantic differences, status
differences, consideration of self-interest, poor listening skills, and issues related to personal
space” (Hitt et al., 2018, p. 302). Discuss how one of the aforementioned factors negatively
impacted communication in your case group/team.
Question #3 (Chapter 10): Refer to the “Sometimes a Simple Change Isn’t So Simple” case
(Jernigan & Beggs, 2011) to answer Question #3. “As a process, decision making involves
multiple steps, as shown in Exhibit 10-1” (Hitt et al., 2018, p. 323). Identify and describe one of
these steps with an example from the case (Jernigan & Beggs, 2011). Make sure that you identify
the person making the decision.
Question #4 (Chapter 11): “Task roles involve behaviors aimed at achieving the team’s
performance goals and tasks. Socieoemotional roles require behaviors that support the social
aspects of the team” (Hitt et al., 2018, p. 370). Discuss how a member of your case group/team
assumed either a task role or a socioemotional role. Make sure that you identify the role that you
are discussing.
Question #5 (Chapter 12): “People derive legitimate power (or formal authority) from the positons
they hold in the organization” (Hitt et al., 2018, p. 412). “Expert power arises from special
expertise or technical knowledge that is valuable to others or the organization” (Hitt et al., 2018,
p. 413). Which power base would you prefer to develop for yourself: expert power or legitimate
power? Why?

Question #6 (Chapter 13): “Senior managers must choose the structures to use for their firms.
Middle- and lower-level managers often are involved in these choices, and play a key role in the
implementation of the choices. Factors that should be considered in designing the structure of the
firm include strategy, external environment, internal technology, and organizational size” (Hitt et
al., 2018, p. 434). Which of the aforementioned factors interests you the most? Why?
Question #7 (Chapter 14): “Bowie State University President Aminta H. Breaux announced a oneyear probation for Symphony of Soul (SOS) and a change in the band’s leadership, along with a
new program to enhance the band’s academic program, following a month-long suspension of
band activities as part of a hazing investigation” (Chambers, 2018, para. 1).
“Change is typically thought of as a three-phase process that transforms an organization from an
undesirable state through a difficult transition period to a desirable new state” (Hitt et al., 2018, p.
477). “…the change process involves unfreezing an organization from its current state, moving
(changing) it to a new state, and refreezing it in the new state” (Hitt et al., 2018, p. 477). Utilize
one of the aforementioned phases in the change process to describe the planned changes to
Symphony of Soul.
