Use the PEMDAS ( parenthesis Exponents mutiplication division addition subtraction)

We have only parenthesis and subtraction

First simplify terms in innermost parenthesis ( ) 6w-8w = -2w

expression becomes w - {5w-[6w-(-2w)]}

Again simplify the terms in innermost parenthesis [ ] 6w-(-2w) = 8w

expression becomes w-{5w-8w}

simplify terms in parenthesis { } 5w-8w = -3w

expression becomes w-(-3w) = 4w

I have a  new question. Here it goes.

Henry is paid \$34 for each of the first 40 lawns he mows and \$42 for every lawn he mows after that. If he mows 55 lawns and pays for \$156 in gas, how much is his take-home pay?

Henry mowed 55 lawns.

First 40 lawn =>\$34 per lawn             after that \$42 per lawn

He mowed 55 lawns so number of lawns he mowed for price \$42 = 55 - 40 = 15

Total money earned from mowing the lawns = 34 X40 + 42 X 15 = \$1990

He paid \$156 for gas .

His take home pay = 1990 - 156 =\$1,834
