Simply put, lytic infection is the penetration of a host cell by a lytic phage.

Lytic infection is one of the two major Bacteriol phage-bacterium relationships. It results in the destruction of the infected cell and its membrane during its cycle.

The viral DNA exists as a separate molecule within the bacterial cell, and replicates separately/independently from the host bacterial DNA.
