Over the past ten years, no issues within the US public domain has attracted increased
media attention and controversy as the current healthcare system. Since the enactment of the
Affordable Care Act, popularly referred to as the ObamaCare, healthcare has attracted increased
attention from both the political and the economic systems of the country. While one section of
the population has over the years called for the establishment of a universal healthcare program,
others have opposed the issue in equal measures. However, Magill (2016) notes that while the
US remains one of the countries with the highest disparities in income, this has significantly been
surpassed by the inequalities in access to healthcare. While the rich can access the best care
possible, including private rooms and elective surgery, low-income earners continue to struggle
to access even the most basic preventive care. However, efforts to establish a universal
healthcare system which caters for all people irrespective of the level of their income remains
highly controversial and supported and opposed in equal measures.
