Writing an equation for story problems

The perimeter of a rectangular garden is 40ft. the width is 2 ft more than one half the length. Find the length and width.

How would I write an equation for this?

Let the length of garden = x ft 

therefore width of garden = (x/2)+2

Perimeter = 40 = 2*(Length +width)

or we can write ; 40 =2 *(x+x/2 +2)

or ; 20 =x + x/2 + 2

solving we get ;  3x/2 =18   (Equation)

x = 18*2/3 =12 ft   (Length)

and width = x/2 + 2 = 8 ft 

Answer : Length = 12 ft   & Width = 8 ft
