A pond with a flat bottom has a surface area of 695 m2 and a depth of 2.5 m. On a warm day, the surface water is at a temperature of 25°C, while the bottom of the pond is at 12°C. Find the rate at which energy is transferred by conduction from the surface to the bottom of the pond.

The rate of cooling (as such by Newton) is given as = KA(t1 - t2)/d

where K= thermal conductivity
A = area of cross section
d = depth
t1-t2 = temperature difference

thermal conductivity  of water is 0.6 J/s · m · °C
therefore rate of cooling = 0.6*695*(25-12)/2.5 J/s

therefore rate of cooling = 417 *13 / 2.5 = 2147.6 J/s
