Four families get together for a barbecue. Every member of each family puts his or her name in a hat for a prize drawing. The Martell family has three members, the Werner family five, the Borschowa family four, and the Griffith family six. Two names are drawn from the hat. Find the probability of selecting two members from the same family

The probability of selecting 2 members from the Martell family is 

pM= 2C3/2C18 (the total number of members is 18)

so pM=3/153

You have also for the Werner family :

pW=2C5/2C18=10/153

for the Borshowa family :

pB=2C4/2C18=6/153

and finally for the Griffith family :

pG=2C6/2C18=15/153

We have to add all these probabilities to have the proba of selecting 2 members of a same family so :

p=34/153=0.222
