Case Background
Rita Crundwell served as treasurer and controller for City of Dixon in Illinois. She was
given a 19-year sentence in a Federal prison in February 2013. During her tenure, she faced a
number of challenges touching on her job description and responsibility. According to the
Department of Justice (2013), she was involved in fraud and theft of about $53 million from the
public coffers to finance her quarter horse farming business as well as live a life of luxury. This
was an ethical case that threatened to taint his achievement at the entity where she had struggled
to come out as a diligent and hardworking employee. Rita Crundwell became the city’s first ever
employee to open an inexistent bank account in 1993, an account she would later use to steal
huge amounts of public funds.
