This course work will explore current emerging technologies and related technical management practices globally. Working individually, students will be required to explore the current body of literature/knowledge and conduct research on emerging technologies found in contemporary technology-intensive enterprises. Extensive and advanced readings, search, and writing assignments will be required. The main objective of this course is to provide knowledge on emerging technologies or research and development that can be applied to modern industry.

Oman's Oil and gas industry continues to play a major role in the country's economy. Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and Oman Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (ORPIC), the nation’s biggest oil and gas producers, have been playing a key role in bridging the gap between industry and academia. Emerging Technologies are ones that arise from converging technologies that create new efficiencies; arise from new knowledge or the innovative application of existing knowledge. Discuss the emerging technologies available in the treatment of oily waste water from petroleum refineries. Select any one oil industry from the sultanate of Oman as a case study. By referring at least 6 journals / magazines/ articles/ books and prepare a report (3000 words) covering the following; Sl. No Item (i) Abstract [ Minimum 350 words] (ii) Introduction: The introduction part provides supporting information about the selected topic, the significance, the rational, and objectives need to be discussed in the report. The introduction should not be more than one page in length. (iii) Discuss the different techniques/ methodology employed in the treatment of oily waste water with suitable diagram and label all parts: This part of the paper should contain the detailed research findings and information gained through reading that relate directly to the topic of the course work. (iv) Critically assess the recent technologies, new information, innovations, ideas, and concepts emerging in the oily waste water treatment. (v) Suggestions/recommendations to improve the performance of the existing treatment technology. (vi) Conclusions: By summarizing the findings and tie back to the introduction part covering 70-80% of the data or main points presented in the paper in a summary format. The conclusion generally should be at least one-page in length. Abstract
The paper discusses the different technological methods used to treat the oily wastewater
produced in petroleum refinery companies. The wastewater constitutes of oil combined with
water and other substances. The treatment process can be carried out by physical, chemical and
biological means. There are two stages involved in the process of oily wastewater treatment.
Firstly, there is the primary stage where the oil and grease and all the suspended materials are
reduced. Secondly, there is the second stage where the degradation and decrease of pollutants
take place.
It also discusses the current technologies, innovations, and ideas that are involved in the
treatment process. Water is an important factor and needs to put into consideration. Oman is a
country with the most produced oil where the economy of the country is built on oil production.
The paper focuses on petroleum development Oman (PDO) not much discussion but a bit of the
explanation of the industry and how technology treatment techniques can be or are useful to the
company. It produces the largest amount of oil in Oman country and having an idea of the best
techniques to use is vital.
The paper also outlines the recommendations and suggestions that would make the
treatment process more effective and efficient if the proper channels and more considerations
such as benchmarking are put into consideration. The findings of the treatment methods,
advantages and disadvantages and also the changes necessary of several methods are also
outlined in the paper. Generally, the discussion is about the technological techniques used in the
treatment of oily wastewater with the most accurate and common method being the membrane
technology.

The other discussed technologies are the biological method, coagulation techniques,
floatation method, and classical chemical method. The methods are widely applied in most of the
oil refinery companies. Most described with an illustration of diagrams. Value for water is
greatly described by the methods where a large volume of water is collected.

Case Study: Petroleum Development Oman (PDO)
Introduction
Petroleum refinery companies convert crude oil in too many refined products. The
physical and chemical process is involved in the conversion where a large amount of water is
used in the refining process. Mostly, the water is used in the cooling systems, desalting and
distillation. It is therefore clear that a lot of water is wasted in the petroleum refinery companies.
The companies cannot avoid the generation of large volumes of oily wastewater hence
technological techniques to treat the oily water are much necessary for these companies.
PDO is a production and oil exploration company in the Sultanate of Oman which plays a
major role in the development and economy of Oman since 1967. The government of Oman
partially owns the company. In the production of oil, there is large usage of water that requires
purification. Oman is an arid area where at times water becomes a great challenge, thus making it
a habit for PDO to treat its wastewater.
Oil production is always associated with the production of water as a waste product; the
higher the volume of oil produced in Oman, higher the volume of wastewater. Oily wastewater
endangers human health, pollutes the environment and affects the groundwater and resources as
