The earthquake was reported to have occurred on 26th December in 2004. This undersea
megathrust recorded magnitude of 9-9.3Mw. Its Mercalli Intensity was up to IX in some areas
(An and Liu, 2014).
Death Toll
The tsunami is reported to have aggregately killed 225,000 people in many countries like
India, Sri-Lanka, Thailand, and Maldives among others. The death toll was reported in areas
600km away from the epicentre to Somalia’s Punt land province, on the East African coast,
down to the South African coastline. In Indonesia alone, it was estimated that the death toll was
right up to 200,000, mainly in Sumatra, Acer Province. Sri Lankan and Indian authorities
reported missing or death of tens of thousands (Scot and Mason, 2017). A more significant
number of these causalities were from the Nicobar Islands and the Andaman territories of India.
The Maldives, a low-lying island country, reported enormous economic damage and hundreds of
casualties. Reports indicated the loss of thousands of non-Asian tourists visiting the country.
These areas experienced a lack of clean water, food, and medical treatment. Relief workers had a
tough time to transport necessities to the remote areas as roads were destroyed (An and Liu,
2014).
