Introduction

Small group communication refers to any form of communication which occurs between
three to fifteen people. This entails communication which takes place in meetings, chatting
between friends, and any other formal and nonformal settings. Since every member of the group
brings about their wealth of information, knowledge, and culture, it is important to understand
how small group communication occurs especially when those involved are from a different
cultural background. Often, small groups can be constituted for various purposes, which include
events such as roundtable, panels, symposium, and other forums.
Small Group Stages: Formats and Culture
When formatting themselves, small groups adopt a structure which is circular or in a
semicircular manner. When speaking, most small groups do no adopt a specific structure of who
is going to speak first, but generally, speak and solve issues without a specific pattern of who
speaks and at what point. Most small group communication is meant to address informal issues,
with members of the group contributing to the conversation as they see it fit. In most cases, such
groups might have a group leader who serves the role of keeping the discussion alive and
ensuring that members do not go out of topic or to encourage members to be more involved in
