    • For this assignment, you will develop a policy change to address prisoners who have been sentenced under these three strike laws and have reached the age of 60.
    • In your policy, address the following:

Current Problems facing “the three Strikes” law
The Three Strikes law requires one to face a 25 to life imprisonment for a third strike. A
strike is a violent crime. In California, however, the third strike is different. If a person who
committed two strikes (violent crimes) faces charges for another evident crime or misdemeanor,
they face 25 to life imprisonment (Shichor, & Sechrest, 2012). The implication is that the third
crime does not have to be violent. In the past, it has brought petty offenders into life
imprisonment for petty issues. This includes issues such as donut stealing, pizza stealing, and
shoplifting. The offenders in these cases had been previously sentenced twice for at least two
violent crimes, which mean the last felony, no matter how small, can bring them to 25 years to
lifetime imprisonments (Kovandzic, Sloan III, & Vieraitis, 2002).
In this case, there are two major problems noted with the law, therefore. First, it has
forced law enforcers to sentence minute offenses to life imprisonment. This is an unfair
punishment according to most Americans (Kovandzic, Sloan III, & Vieraitis, 2002). Secondly,
the current overcrowding in prisons is mainly because of many life imprisonments and long
terms, from 25 years and above passed due to the three strike laws. The congestion in Californian
