Worley does not support the establishment of laws that restrict the possession and use of
guns citing they infringe the rights of the people to protect themselves and deny them a sense of
safety. The law enforcement agencies cannot protect all the people, and therefore the laws make it
difficult for the individuals to protect themselves, their homes, and their families which is a natural
right that is aligned with the right to life law. He argues that Americans need guns since they use
them to protect themselves and prevent crimes that are committed every day. He supports his
argument by giving an example of a situation where four gunmen entered a store owned by Kaplan
brothers in Harlem and demanded money as they threatened to shoot an employee. The owner 75year old Augusto had a shotgun which he had acquired due to previous robbery incidents and used
it to defend himself and his employees. He shot and killed two of the robbers injuring the other
two. Hence gun control laws will limit the ability of the people to defend themselves.

Weiss reports on the staggering increase in cases of gun theft by criminals from legal gun
owners in America. Every year there are more than 37,000 guns stolen from legal owners by
criminals through a variety of ways such as burglary, carjacking, and mugging. The gun theft has

increased violent crime and mass murder across the country leading to increased support in the
establishment of gun laws. There is a direct link between gun theft and crime because guns that
are stolen end up in crime scenes. The laws would reduce the availability of guns and increase gun
owners’ responsibilities. Weiss notes that more than two million guns were stolen within the last
ten years and the number may be even higher as many of the incidents are not reported. The
problem is negligence by gun owners who do not shelter their weapons making it easy for criminals
to steal and use them in committing a crime. Gun laws will make gun owners more responsible for
the safety of their guns reducing access by criminals and will reduce crime and mass murders.

Barr has a unique perspective on the issue of gun control laws by admitting that there is a
need for regulations, but they should aim at educating the people about guns and gun safety to
prevent the adverse effects of accidental deaths of which kids are victims. He says that the issue is
not a gun control issue but a culture of gun control. He narrates various incidents of accidental gun
deaths which make it clear that laws that promote education concerning gun safety and safety
practices are needed to reduce gun-related deaths. He narrates the most recent story where a fifteenyear-old boy accidentally shot himself while taking a picture with his father’s gun. Guns do not
kill people but rather those who misuse them do. Lack of education of gun safety and safety
procedures will help reduce the accidental deaths. He outlines that guns are not a threat to the
society since they accord the people the right provided by the second amendment, but public
education is necessary.

O’Donnell suggests that laws that protect women from those who abuse them domestically
should be implemented as a measure of reducing the increasing number of women who are killed
by their partners and stalkers. According to statistics, five women are killed every day in the United
States with guns which have been lawfully acquired. Whenever there is a gun in a household, the
chances of death resulting from a domestic dispute increases by five hundred times. The number
of deaths from guns in domestic conflicts is even higher than the number of militaries killed in
wars. He suggests that those individuals with a history of domestic violence should be restricted
from owning guns, especially after the Florida shooting. The gunman had a history of abusing his
girlfriend. He recaps that more than 50% of mass shooters in the country have a history of domestic
abuse. Laws that regulate ownership and possession of guns by those who perpetrate domestic
violence would therefore significantly reduce deaths resulting from gun ownership.
