the sum of two number is 63 and the difference is 17. what are the numbers ?

Jun 21st, 2015

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

Let  x present one of the numbers and let  y represent the other one.

 therefore we form two equations from the statement.

for sum

x+y=63............................................................(i)

for difference

x-y=17--------------------------------------------------(ii)

we use substitution method by making x in equation (ii) the subject

x=y+17................................................................(iii)

subtituting equation (iii) in (i) we get instead writing x

y+17+y=63

taking like terms together

2y=63-17

2y=46

dividing both sides by 2

i.e

2y/2=46/2

y=23

subtituting y in (ii)

x=23+17

=40

therefore the numbers are 40 and 23
