Next Steps in the Case
The family provides conflicting accounts of Shayne’s situation. Shayne’s father, Mr.
Thomas, claims that Shayne’s behavior has improved and he is always on time, but on the
other hand, Mrs. Thomas claims that Shayne’s behavior is still truant and destructive.
Shayne, who has a bruise under one eye, claims that he was hit by his father, Mr. Thomas.
Tamika has to make a decision on the next steps to take in relation to the Thomas
family dynamics. In relation to Shayne’s maltreatment, she can discuss this issue during one
on one sessions, and also bring up the subject during group sessions in order to get the true
account of events. This will help reconcile any issues of culture, individual behavior, and
parenting roles which could be contributing to the maltreatment (, 2016). Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas also need to be provided with useful information on child development and rearing,
in order to ensure that self-destructive behaviors in their children, such as truancy and
potential drug abuse, are addressed.
