The gilded age was the era of rapid economic growth mostly in the west and
north. America during this period experienced an influx of immigrants due to her high
wages compared to Europe. The immigration meant an increase in population and
need for living space, which led to urbanization. Urbanization had varied effects on
society socially, economically and politically.
During the gilded age, there was the introduction of the skyscrapers in
architecture, which was a great improvement in the organization of towns. People
were able to live high above the streets in high-rise buildings. The advantage of
skyscrapers was that people lived on smaller pieces of land instead of the previous
