Question description

Application: Paper on Amnesia or Nature vs. Nurture Controversy

For this week’s Assignment, you write a paper on one of the three topics listed below. The first two topics deal with different types and causes of amnesia. The last topic involves analyzing the nature versus nurture controversy and proposing one resolution to this debate.

The Assignment:

Select one of the following topics and write a 5-page paper. Your paper must follow APA guidelines including proper citations of references:

  • Amnesia due to emotional trauma:
There is scientific consensus that amnesia can be caused by head trauma and other organic causes. More controversial is amnesia caused by emotional trauma. There is little or no experimental evidence for the psychodynamic mechanism of repression. Yet movies portray this as a common event. Do you believe that amnesia can be caused by emotional trauma? What possible underlying mechanism would explain this phenomenon in neurologic terms? What doubts are cast by researches on the validity of psychological amnesia? You must address both the pros and cons of this issue and demonstrate critical thinking, not just advocating one position over the other. Support your paper using the current literature. You may wish to refer to this week’s optional learning resources as a starting point.
  • Amnesia in Korsakoff’s syndrome:
Compare and contrast the amnesia associated with bilateral medial-temporal lobectomy and that associated with Korsakoff ’s syndrome. Support your paper using the current literature.
  • Nature vs. Nurture Controversy:
Critically evaluate the nature versus nurture controversy and formulate one resolution to this debate. Use examples related to the topics covered in Weeks 4, through 6 in support of your evaluation.

APA PLEASE!!!!! Plenty of references (8-10) within 5 years

Introduction
Amnesia can be defined as the deficit in memory caused by brain damage, disease or
psychological trauma. Amnesia can also be caused temporarily by use of various sedative and
hypnotic drugs. The mind, in this case, can be either lost wholly or partially depending on the
extent of the damage caused to the brain. Typically, Amnesia can be classified into two broad
categories that are retrograde amnesia and anterograde amnesia. Retrograde Amnesia is defined
as the inability to retrieve the information acquired in the past especially before a particular date,
for instance, the time of accident or surgery. In some people, the memory may lose for some
months while others may lose for an extended period. On the other hand, anterograde amnesia is
the inability to transfer information stored in short-term memory to long-term memory. People
suffering from this disorder are unable to remember things for a wrong period. According to the
studies conducted by various scholars, it has been revealed that amnesia is primarily associated
with the damage of the medial temporal lobe and the hippocampus is also involved in the
memory. As per the studies, amnesia can be acquired in many ways. To mention a few, head
trauma wherein head injuries and any active action to the brain will cause amnesia. Physical
deficiencies such as atrophy of the hippocampus and traumatic events such as seeing something
devastating to the mind can lead to amnesia.
Amnesia associated with korsakoff syndrome
Korsakoff syndrome also popularly known as Wernick-korsakoff syndrome is a brain
disorder caused by severe thiamine deficiency which can be described as a kind of malnutrition
which is mostly precipitated by excessive consumption of alcohol and alcoholic beverages
compared to another foodstuff. The main symptoms associated with this type of amnesia are the

inability to learn new information and severe loss of the existing memories. Also, confabulation
which is the invention of minds, which are then taken as true due to gaps in memory, little
content in conversation, lack of insight and apathy are among the symptoms of the disorder that
can be identified (Butters, et al., 2014).
Amnesia associated with bilateral medial-temporal lobectomy
The amnesia above causes changes to the brain cells that result in seizures, seasons of unusual
behaviors and sometimes unconsciousness. The brain's temporal lobe handles emotions and help
in processing and storing short-term memory. Complex partial seizures and simple partial
seizures are classifications of the disorder due to unconscious patients and conscious patients
respectively. A temporal lobectomy can be defined as a surgery done to reduces the number of
seizures one have, reducing them to less severe or stopping them from happening. The above
disorder is majorly caused by severe traumatic injury, genetics, stroke, abnormal electronic
activities in the brain and brain trauma. Some of the symptoms associated with the disease are
anxiety, arising sensation in the abdomen, déjà vu, and extreme happiness (Parkin, et al., 2014).
Differences between bilateral medial-temporal lobectomy and korsakoff syndrome
Korsakoff syndrome is a disease that affects the memory while medial temporal
lobectomy is a procedure conducted to remove seizure from an individual suffering from
lobectomy.
A temporal lobectomy can be defined as changes to the brain cells that result in seizures
bringing about periods of unusual behavioral and unconsciousness in individuals. Here the brain
handles emotions and help in processing and storing information in short-term memory of the
mind for easier retrieval before transferring to the long-term memory. On the other hand,

korsakoff syndrome can be described merely as a brain disorder caused by severe thiamine
deficiency which can be described as a kind of malnutrition which is mostly precipitated by
excessive consumption of alcohol and alcoholic beverages compared to other foodstuffs
(Zubkov, et al., 2015).
Korsakoff syndrome disorders can be classified into retrograde amnesia and anterograde
amnesia. Retrograde amnesia is defined as the inability to remember the information acquired in
the past especially before a particular date, for instance, the time of accident or surgery. In some
