Introduction:
Mentoring, coaching, counseling and consulting have been the back bone of many businesses. People in
leadership positions normally seek help from this people. The meaning of this different groups of people
afore mentioned has been used interchangeably and has brought a lot of confusion. This paper,
therefore, looks into this issue.
Purpose: The aim of this research is to compare and contrast mentoring, coaching, counseling and
consulting with supported evidence. It also focuses on executive coaching, what it is and how it can be
successfully implemented.
CASE STUDY OR EXAMPLE:
A high performing partner x was recently promoted to the level of assistant manager in a very
prestigious bank. She had no previous knowledge whatsoever of the roles of an assistant manager. In
her previous position she didn’t have time to worry about “management and admin”. She was very
confused as to whom to seek help from. She had her mentor. Her formal boss who previously held the
position. She knew a consultant. He studied banking and finance. She knew a life coach who she could
ask to help her with her difficulties. She knew a coach to whom she could meet to direct her on how to
handle the stress and pressure that came with the job. She organized a meeting with each of these
people. She performed very wonderfully and was asked how she did it.
Concepts:

individual x meets the coach, who directs her on how she can maximize her own productivity and skill.

Counseling: according to the coactive coaching, the boundary between coaching and counseling is not
defined by a set of absolute rules or terms. In general, counselors are trained to diagnose and help client
with emotional problems, the past or dysfunction while coaches are not. The coach’s domain is future
oriented- what does the client want? And then coaching client to get there. Example: the counselor
helps her to manage stress and pressure that are to come at work.

Mentoring- a mentor is a wise and trusted guide and advisor. The mentor is the teacher that shares their
experience while bringing the “mentee” up in the ranks. A coach is not necessarily the subject matter

expert in order to help develop from client. Example: the mentor show her how things are done in the
new level and the manner in which they are done.
Consulting- a consultant is an expert who is called on for professional ...
