Grit and Growth
This week, you viewed two video lectures (the “source material”). The first video was Dr. Angela Duckworth explaining her concept of “grit” and the second video was Dr. Carol Dweckexplaining her concept of “growth mindset”.
Your assignment is to:
Summarize the Duckworth “Grit” video
Summarize the Dweck “Growth” video
Write a comparison in your own words of how these concepts relate to each other.
Please write a paragraph for each bullet above and use complete sentences. The total length of this assignment is 750 words (double-spaced, using 12 pt. Times New Roman). Use Microsoft Word to prepare your assignment. You will attach the Word document to the assignment dropbox (do not type directly into the dropbox).
Refer to the Pocket Keys for Writers (chapter 8b) to refresh your memory on how to summarize material (taking notes over the source material); also review this week’s written lecture for tips on summarizing videos.
Prewriting and Outlining for the Narrative Essay
This week, you will be preparing for next week’s essay: the narrative. Take a moment and review the directions for the Week 3 narrative essay. Once you have a topic you want to write your narrative about, you will complete this two part assignment: prewriting and outlining.
The first part of this assignment will help you “flesh out” your topic. Take 10-15 minutes to free write about your topic. Chapters 4 and 5 in your textbook can help you decide what kind of free writing you want to do, but don’t feel restricted by one genre. Write down everything that pertains to your topic, including questions your readers might have. Don’t worry about grammar or sentence structure; this is a brainstorming activity.
Next, create an outline as a preliminary structure for the narrative essay. Use several of the outlining rules on pp. 111-115 of The Writer’s Way, but be sure to include the following:
Outline in three to five parts only (rule no. 1)
Don’t describe; summarize (no. 5)
Outline whole sentences only (no. 8)
You may use as many of the other rules as you feel necessary. The goal is to present a structure for how your final essay may look. As such, an outline is not a series of paragraphs or a rough draft.
Please submit your responses to both prompts in a single document.
Overcoming Cognitive Biases
It is easy to be taken in by cognitive biases, especially given that they operate at a subconscious or non-rational level. It is therefore important that we be aware of them. Accordingly, this week’s assignment will be a poster project in which you design warning posters. You will be creating three warning posters for three different cognitive biases. A warning poster might look something like this:
Begin by selecting three cognitive biases covered in this week’s reading or lectures. Using an online tool or application such as Microsoft Word, create three warning posters that explain the dangers behind the three cognitive biases you have selected. Each warning poster should contain the name of the cognitive bias, a very brief explanation of what it is, a message on how to avoid falling into it, and at least one image. All three posters should be different.
Feel free to be creative!
Statistics are powerful and convincing when used properly. This feature of statistical reasoning, however, also makes them liable to misuse. In this week’s assignment, you will find a legitimate statistic and explain how it might be used to mislead an audience.
Start by searching the internet for a reliable statistic. Make sure the statistic you find comes from an original or primary source – whether it be a peer-reviewed article, think-tank, or other organization. Do not use news articles that report the findings of a study; use the original study itself. Please remember to cite your source.
After you locate your statistic, explain how it might be used to mislead an audience into embracing conclusions that the statistic does not support by playing the role of someone who is trying to lie with statistics.
Design a fake advertisement or news story in which you will try to use the statistic in question to make a persuasive point.
oYour advertisement or story can consist of a written document, graphic, or video.
oWhatever you decide to do, you should feature a depiction or description of the statistic and an explanation of how it might be used to support a misleading agenda.
After creating your fake advertisement or news story, include a short one paragraph statement on why it is misleading and what can be done to avoid being misled by it.
