Growth is the irreversible increase in the size of an organism. In human beings, growth
is accompanied by the ability to read and understand the surrounding. A Lot of people do not
think about the process of learning how to read until they embark on a journey of teaching their
children. Many people think learning how to read is a natural process but the truth is far from
it. It is a complex process that needs strategic training and teaching from a young age. The
interview I contacted with various relatives I found out that teaching children how to read starts
with the basic things. Several parents claimed to have used nursery rhymes and songs to
establish and build phonemic awareness to their kids. Apart from bringing joy and fun to
children, they help them in hearing the sounds and syllables in words. This in return helps them
to learn how to read. One of the highly used technique used to develop phonemic awareness in
children is to clap rhythmically and recite poems in one accord. This exercise helps kids to
develop skills that help them in reading.
Another majorly used method used by parents to teach their kids how to learn is using
word cards. One relative informed that they trained their children using this method. They
would write different words on different cards then allow the child to pick any of the card. The
child would then read the written word. If the written word is difficult for the child, the parent
would assist in reading it. The big challenge presented by this method of learning is quick
boredom. Since children lose concentration easily, this method does not have impressive
results. Posters and banners were other great media used to teach children how to read. As
some parents passed via the mall, they would ask the child to read a certain word or sentence
written on a poster. This way, the child’s ability to read and understand would be enhanced.
The major accomplishments in training children how to read came from home games.
When a parent is involved in reading words game with their child is both fun and educative for
the children. Integrating fun in reading enables the kid to concentrate for long without losing
attention.

Contrary to the olden days, as described by one grandparent, today's society is information
driven. The need to teach a child how to read at an early age is on the increase. Nowadays there
are many opportunities that parents can leverage to teach their children how to read. The
introduction of mobile devices and applications that simulate a real classroom situation has
helped to enhance the reading ability of kids. Computer and smartphone games, tv programmes
that can aid kids in reading are many and readily available for many people in the globe.
The parents I interviewed had different suggestions on how reading can be improved in
children. For example, adults need to know the core skills required to teach kids how to read.
Before they can pass the knowledge down the generation, a fundamental understanding of the
skills is key. Parents need to have the ability to hear and manipulate various sounds in words.
They also need to recognise the relationship between letters and the sounds they make. Reading
aloud with speed is another suggestion that some parents highlighted they could have
emphasised back in time. Speed in reading determines the degree of accuracy and
understanding. Parents also suggested that another great method to enhance the reading
capability in children is to understand meaning of words and how they fit in the context they
are being used.
Emergent literacy refers to the skills, knowledge and attitudes that are developed by a
child in relation to reading and writing in their early childhood stages. It encompasses aspects
like oral language, understanding different meaning in prints, early phonological awareness
and understanding fundamental alphabetic knowledge. Emergent literacy is usually viewed as
the first stage in reading development that leads to acquiring full reading literacy. A crucial
aspect in emergent literacy is the attitude put towards reading and writing that kids g...
