Proximity TO: Proximity Music Team FROM: CC: Paul Miers DATE: Jan 4, 2012 SUBJECT: Winter Focus Group Session on Streaming Music Platforms Informative subject line Intro answers 3 key questions: -What is this? -What’s the story? -What’s next? We were asked to propose topics for Proximity’s Winter 2012 focus group sessions. Here I discuss how the rapid growth of subscription-based delivery systems is changing the music landscape. I propose we run a focus group session with TU students to find out how they are listening to music. Please be ready to offer feedback on this proposal at our team meeting on Thursday. Streaming services now dominate the music landscape Message-style heading Subscription based music providers such as Pandora Radio, Rhapsody, and Spotify are booming. These services stream music directly from the provider’s server across the network to the end user. 2nd order structure with metrics Topic sentence for direct paragraph Pandora, with 100 million-plus registered users, dominates the internet radio market and is growing at an extraordinary pace (Radio-Info, 2012). Rhapsody just passed the one million paid subscribers milestone in the US and is expanding internationally (Associated Press, 2011). Spotify’s founder, Daniel Ek, has been called the “The Most Important Man in Music” because analysts believe his service can save the music industry from piracy and iTunes (Bertoni, 2012). Streaming provides an advertising alternative to FM radio Message-style heading The death of FM radio coupled with the growth of iTunes and illegal downloading have made it difficult for marketers to use music to engage millennial consumers. Subscription services offer two key features that appeal to this demographic and are not available on iTunes or other music delivery systems (Gartner, 2011): multiple platform delivery for use on mobile devices; integration with social networking sites such as Facebook. Advertisers can use free streaming services to reach millennials anywhere and integrate music into a comprehensive social media strategy. Topic sentence for direct paragraph Proximity | 2 Topics to discuss in the focus group session Extended topic heading To find out just how popular these subscription music providers really are with millennial listeners, this session should cover the following topics: popularity of broadcast radio; use of streaming services; effectiveness of ads on free streaming platforms. Information from this session will allow Proximity to advise clients on how to optimize ad buys and develop a social music strategy. References Associated Press. (Dec. 22 2011). Proximity TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: Proximity Social Media Teams Paul Miers Jan. 2, 2019 Winter Focus Group Proposals Proximity is now planning its Winter 2019 focus group sessions. Your assignment is to write a brief memo (1-2 pp) to your team proposing a focus group topic for this spring’s sessions. Schedule • Select a topic during your team meeting today. • Post a draft of your focus group memo on Blackboard by the start of class on Thursday, Jan. 3. • Submit your memo for grading by the end of the day on Monday, Jan. 7. Why Proximity focus group sessions are important Focus group sessions with Towson students provide the critical proprietary information we need to advise our clients. We only have one chance each semester to discover how millennials use of social media is changing. Your team must identify the most important topics you want focus group participants to discuss during the one-hour sessions. What your memo should contain Your memo should do the following: • • • discuss the specific trend or issue you are proposing to cover in a focus group (see list of suggested topics below) and provide some metrics; explain why this trend is important to some set of our clients who want to engage millennial consumers (i.e. who would pay us for information from the proposed session?); identify topics which should be covered during the proposed focus group session. How to research and write your memo You can find sources for information in the Blackboard assignment folder, on Proximity’s blog, by searching the Google news, and from a Cook OneSearch. Your memo should reference current, information from at least two reliable sources (see CRAP test) which you cite using APA style. Before you draft your memo, you should read Mastering Workplace Writing, Ch. 1 -3. Use the Proximity memo template on Blackboard to write your proposal.
